What irons would you recommend to a scratch golfer?

JOUK.

I'm slightly confused by your OP.

You post some incredible stuff on here, especially the technical pieces in the ask the expert section. And in all probability you come across as someone who would appear to know the game very well. So I'm a little confused that you'd need to ask about a set of clubs.

Not a critisism, just an observation.
No worries and I totally agree with your observations.
I can seethat it would be considered by most people to be unusual. I played yesterday and one chap had a nice shiny new driver that he bought yesterday (latest Titleist apparently) and I can't even remember what he said it was :o ...though he did say that it had a diammana shaft [sp?] (...it was a 4&3 victory :D)

I don't really care too much about clubs - when people tell me what they've got all I think to myself is "Yeh, but can you hit it?" :p

I'd be looking at the demo days in your area. Most come with trackman monitors to record all the vital sticks and most will include the top end blades as well as clubs for joe punter like me. That way you'll get a choice of shaft, a chat with a company rep and your figures from the monitor. Other than that there is a Mizuno fitting centre at World of Golf in New malden (HTL's 2nd home) or Chessingtom for the Cally HQ. Otherwise others have recommneded the Belfry which has a load of main manufacturers

Are you currently a scratch golfer, or a low handicapper that can play to par ? Or do you want the clubs to get you from 5 ( fill in h/c as applicable ) to give you that edge to get you down those final few strokes ?

JustOne,
I've taken your post at face value because I know of VERY good players like you who have no idea. It's often the guy who strolls up with a carry bag with half a set of old blades who mullers me!

The very best advice is to go see a professional fitter and not some sales rep at a demo day. At your standard you'll be flushing it nearly all the time so will notice the difference in shafts and heads.

I'd imagine a properly fitted set for you would knock at least a stroke off your handicap.

Mizuno

MP 67 or MP 62

...have we played??? :D :D :D
I'm just not that interested in clubs as they change every 5 minutes. I don't even want to know what the difference is between the new R9 and the R7 (two clubs that I happen to know the names of as my mate has the R9).

It's like driving cars but not knowing anything about them, I hate cars for what it's worth... but I'm pretty good with computers :p :p :p

I've heard this bloke can slap it about a bit ...

Shane Lowry The 3 Irish Open
Driver: Titleist 909D2 8.5°
3-wood: Titleist 909F2 15.5°
Hybrid: Titleist 909H 19°
Irons (3-9): Titleist AP2
Wedge: Titleist Vokey Design 48°
Wedge: Titleist Vokey Design 52°
Wedge: Titleist Vokey Spin Milled 58°
Putter: Scotty Cameron Fastback
Ball: Titleist Pro V1x

Zach Johnson plays pretty much the same clubs

Harrington uses Wilson Pi7s

Sergio uses Tailormade

Poulter uses Cobra Pro MB

And obv Tiger play Nike

Shhhhh, not a Mizuno in sight yet  ;)

Not being remotely cynical about the big boys, but what's the chance of you getting someone to sponsor you. I think that might sway your choice, by the look at the way the pros treat it. Maybe all the manufacturers make decent sticks

Oh and Cobra have got some demo days coming up as well.

And c/f pros within a few miles of you ( I assume you're in sussex somewhere ) - just look on their website

I would always go with the stiffist shafts you can handle, what do you use at the moment ? and are you happy with your current ball flight etc ?. It would be best to try out a few first do you live anywhere near a Mizuno fitting centre.

I use Dynamic Gold x100's I think that by going a bit stiffer you will get a tighter shot dispersion and IMO be more accurate, although you may loose a few yards.

You can get that if you are 17, play off low single figures and have a few good competition results under your belt. I'm 40 and happy that I still have all my own hair and teeth :)

OK, I just looked it says Dynamic gold R300U on my irons, but I can't judge if that's good or bad for my swing as the clubs weigh a ton!

FWIW: I measured my swingspeed with a friends Callaway X's?? and it was 9mph faster without doing anything different. Distance with my irons is not a problem...I want more feel and control than the cavity back 'Tesco clubs' I'm currently playing with.

My driver is a Titleist 983K 9.5 with a Grafalloy Prolite 35-S shaft. Does that actually MEAN anything to someone??? :D My buddy gave it to me last year.

Most of my friends have stiff shafts in their clubs but ALL of their swingspeeds are less than mine. I did think maybe they aren't getting the most out of their shafts and it's all some kind of ego trip that they think they need stiff shafts when firm flex might be better.... I'm guessing of course.

Basically I want to find a set of irons that are classed as 'decent' because then I know I can't blame the clubs in anyway shape or form (not that I do of course).

I have a 56° Vokey wedge and that just says "Dynamic gold Wedge" whatever that is!! :D :D

I don't consider that I hit the ball any higher or lower than anyone else I play with, not uber high, not uber low. I still hit the same trajectory as when I was playing my ram tour grinds and I was happy with those.

Okay.

Craphacker, they don't play Mizuno because Mizuno don't pay out extortionate wodges of cash to secure players names on their bags. They don't need to. Before all the money was splashed about Mizuno were played by many more players.

Freddie, I disagree that you should play the stiffest you can handle. Far better to play the lightest flex you can handle so you've some give on an off day. Might not be so important off scratch though.

JustOne, what is your 150 club? How far do you carry your driver?

OK the r300 is a regular shaft so I would imagine you need to go stiffer than that, the S300 is the standard stiff shaft.
Have a look at the true temper website there is a shaft fit program on there try it and see what it comes back with.

You will need to try a shaft first especially as you are looking to change away from what you are currently using so if there is a local pro shop or testing centre it would be better to use it.

I would check out one of the following:

Callaway x-forged
Ping S-57
Mizuno MP62
Cobra Pro MB/CB

The 'other' magazine has a fairly comprhensive irons review this month......did I say that out loud? :o

All things being equal a 9-iron for 150yds and ballpark 260 carry with driver, well 260 over a bunker wouldn't worry me too much, over a pond would probably be a case of having to rather than wanting to.

Someone of your ability will be able to use anything you dam well like. In my opinion for what its worth I love the look of the TM Tour blade thingies used by Sergio. That said I'm a Ping man through and through and would probably be swayed towards S57's.

I picked up a Srixon I701 Tour the other day in a Pro shop and thought it looked beautiful, not an out and out blade but forged so it has the workability aspect that a better player would look for. Or get the Srixon Pro 100, these bad boys are only made to specification and have to be custom fitted at the new Srixon/Cleveland fitting centre in Berkshire.
