So if you hit 3 balls into the farmers field over a hedge on a tee box and your 4th makes the fairway apart from crying how is this scored?

For each additional ball after the first, you count the extra stoke and add a penalty stroke.
It's called 'Stroke & Distance'

Tee Shot 1 - 1st shot
Tee Shot 2 - 3rd shot
Tee Shot 3 - 5th shot
Tee Shot 4 - 7th shot Your next shot, on the fairway is your 8th, as Crow advises

Ideally you will have been playing Stableford and you would just have left it alone after the second went into the field. If Strokeplay the tears are an entirely acceptable response by ball 4

It was precisely because of this sort of thing at some of the early holes at Wallasey, the Dr Frank Stableford invented the system!

Though that did not make my buddies first six holes on Saturday stableford total of ZERO points any the easier for him to bear...and off 12 into the bargain...:) Though no worse than two over nett did ease the pain a little (when we pointed it out to stop his tears) of another mate and his 9, 14 start on Sunday.
