Ok so your thinking of buying some shiny new irons but your not exactly sure which brand or what type ie GI or blades etc.

You decide to get a custom fit so that you can get the best possible clubs to suit you and you are prepared to pay for this service.

What exactly should you get for your money? How long should you expect the process to take in order to get value for money? What options should come as standard? Like trying all kinds of different shafts etc?

Does the standard of a custom fit vary massively depending on where you go? Will a specialist for a particular brand offer a much more comprehensive fit compared to an independant retailer?

wow lots of questions all in one post.

the service you receive IMO will vary dependant on where you go, if you go to
1. A specific manufacturer you would expect to work with the fitter to acheive the best results you both are happy with (head shaft looks) but only the best available to them.
2. If you go to an independant specialist fitter you should expect the same results but across all brands.
3. Main stream superstore or local pro will offer the best they stock and in the best fit for standard stock shafts with a tweak of lie and loft if necessary.
I would expect to pay for options 1 and 2, but with maybe the cost or at leats some of it knocked off if you place an order.
Option 3 would generally be FoC.

Custom fits vary, but I would say that the minimum should include:

1. Determination of suitable lie and length, perhaps with a impact board which the sole of the club strikes.

2. Choice of shaft type and flex based on launch monitor data

3. Determination of grip type and size.

This should not be a lengthy business, and should not cost much.

Now, you can also go for an all singing all dancing service with loads more data and choices, but that will cost a bit more.

My preference would be to do this at a pro shop that has fitting carts for a few of the popular brands rather than a chain store.

Exactly what I've just done at my club, the best £35 I've spent, started with an hour's session, then a 2nd hour to look at more club choices, then 2 further sessions hitting lots of balls - placed my order today!
