Not true, R&A made a statement that if an Am should win it then the first place prize will be distributed amongst the pros who made the cut. 2nd place will still get 2nd place prize.

I'm surprised at that. I would have thought 1st place prize money would go to the leading pro if an amateur won and cascade down through the other places accordingly.

Along with everyone in Ireland, I'll be rooting for him this afternoon. What a story it would be if he pulls it off

Apparently the spread of the prize money is done differently here than at other comps. When Shane Lowry won the Irish Open as an amateur his prize money went to the second place player. It was assumed that would happen again here but the R & A have released a statement today saying otherwise. It will be spread as others have already pointed out.

He will probably settle down a bit but that was nerves,great thing is he had a smile after he done it.

I think it will be distributed proportionately so the 2nd place wouldn't get it all but would get a bigger share than 3rd etc. Basically they all get a bit more than they might have but as you go down the field they each get less.

Great to see him come back to par. Even if he doesn't win I really hope he digs in to ensure the Silver Medal. It would be a bit gutting to lead last night then lose the medal today.

I thought he did great. There couldn't be a more intense situation for a young golfer and he had a terrible start, but he stuck to it. Didn't work out but he didn't have any tantrums, throw clubs or swear at the gallery.

I think he needed a very high finish to catapult straight into a pro career, so now I think he will stick with the Walker Cup plan.

Bit of a way to go before the calls from Clarke happen

It was pressure - could see it in his first couple holes and it's something he will need to find a way to deal with or he will struggle

Very pleasant young man though he looked like despite struggling was still enjoying himself

I was thinking the same. I know Dunne has said he wants to play the Walker Cup first and then turn pro. I think you can't associate such intense scrutiny on his last round to what life will be like on tour after the initial media frenzy of his first few pro events and he can settle into life on tour. Everyone wrote Rose off after 21 missed cuts but he didn't do so bad and I see a lot of similarities here

Saw him teeing off for his 1st round at Hoylake last year. Quite a crowd in the stands as Rafa C-Bello also with him, yet it was when Ivor called out Dunne's name that the place lit up.

Was like half his home town had come to watch him! Only saw him for the 1st couple of holes, but he seemed quite steady then.

Hopefully will get to watch more of him at The Walker Cup this year. He's got a promising future ahead, hope he can be one of the few that makes it.

Turning pro is simply the next step on a long ladder.

He would need to join the Pro Tour and play well.
Win and earn some cash.
Then if then he makes it in to the Pro tour top 5 he will be eligible to join the Challenge tour.
Q School.
Would again need to play well with some wins. I think it the top 10 or 15 then gain their European tour card.
That card would entitle him to play in about 5 European tour events.
Smallish events that the top lads don't want to play in.

The more cash he wins then the better up the pecking order he would move.
He could get some sponsors invites in to decent events but there are pro players waiting for the same. Even if he does get invites he would need to earn a lot of cash playing them.

In the mean time the cost are all going up.

£300 to join the Pro tour. Don't know the cost of the challenge tour. £150 entry fee for
most events. Travel, Digs, Caddies, Coaches and all the other costs involved.


It isn't an easy ladder to clime.

He will as with others get a big helping hand

Will no doubt get a good sponsership deal first - prob worth about a million

Then he will get numerous sponser invites into several tour events - it's highly possible that he could earn a tour card without the need to go near a Q school.

If I were him I would be turning pro now. At the moment he is headline news and a big deal. That has to help when looking for the lucrative sponsorship deal and tour invites. By next week he will just be 'the amateur bloke who led the open' and give it a month and most will be hard pressed to remember his name and he will be back in the ranks of all the other up and coming amateurs looking for that big sponsorship deal.

If he had won he could take his time, his name would be part of golfing history but as he faded on the last day his time in the limelight will be very short lived. Strike now whilst your name is all over the press.
