But picture aside your opening line in the OP is true the brain is a brilliant thing. People believe what they think they see rather than seeing the true image. The brain makes them focus of the centre of the image and gives cursory attention to outside areas making them believe they see a rock in mid air because the rock is effectively the target image. But to truly see what is actually going on you don't even need flip it upside down, you need to change your focus to the periphery of the target area and all the signs are there, the distortion of the trees, the high bank seemingly a grass area but the outer blurred areas are water etc..

I did a good course in target imagery and how to correctly gain target focus back in my Recce troup days.. The brain sees what it wants you to see if you allow it to focus only on centre mass of an object.
