What bloody shaft?????????????

Much discussion on this before, but I agree with the skepticism that the low smash factor can be explained by height. Smash factor is essentially about the efficiency of conversion of club head speed to ball speed. The angle of attack on the ball is certainly a factor, as is the club face orientation and how close to the sweet spot (although that is actually a relatively minor factor unless you are really missing the sweetspot by a mile.

So the task is not just to find the right shaft, but a complimentary head and an analysis of where the leak of power is occurring.

I would be inclined to go to a pro who is used to working with professionals. Not necessarily Denis Pugh or Bob Torrance, but maybe someone who works with regional up and coming players, or a specialist high end fitter such as Precision Golf. You could also try one of the long hitters, such as Paul Barrington, the long driver who does lessons in the Bristol area.

If 128mph is the correct club head speed then the question about how many Xs in the flex, just X or XX stiff? Look at shafts that pros use, and they will include Diamana Whiteboard (aka Ahina) in 73 and 83g weights, Rombaz Z series, Graphite Design Tour AD-6, 7 or 8 (as used by Tiger Woods), Grafalloy Blue (if you can still get one - no longer current model), UST V2 (various weights) etc etc.

But it is hard to choose one in isolation, because it also depends on the club head.

The guys at Precision Golf have over 200 shafts to try as part of the fitting. Yes, different makes, weight, frequency. See my review thread on Ask the Experts as you are roughly covering a similar path to me...

How? I think the figures are patently wrong and independent fitters have access to better 'exotic' shafts than the OEM's.

..and I never promoted myself did I? ;-)
No. But you should probably say what you do.

I agree with you re the figures though - as I've posted - and the access to shafts. Though the brief could well be an economical (best value) one! Oban Devotion perhaps?

The only thing that I think may explain those numbers (given ball speed, centredness spin and launch indicated previously in the thread) is if relatively speaking a lot of clubhead speed is lost between impact and seperation. Clubhead speed at seperation is more important for ball speed than clubhead speed at impact. A 20% decrease would be an efficient strike (think the ball is hitting the club as the club hits the ball).

I'd go custom fitting for driver shafts every day of the week, but you need a choice of shafts and lofts / heads to suit. I got fitted very early on by Taylormade when they started doing it at the Belfry and I ended up with a driver, but they had nothing there even close to suiting me; all I got out of it were numbers and had to take a punt on an untried shaft.

Edit: I have assumed you've used proper golf balls, I wouldn't want to be fitted without them.

Your probably right but I'm not on this forum to tout for business, I'm new to this forum but as you can probably see from my (limited) number of posts, I'm not selling. I'm a member of two other forums and very rarely push what I do. I would always promote an independent fitter, because I do believe that they have access to better product - for example, Aerotech, are fantastic shafts but no OEM does them. OEM's don't offer servies like frequency matching or MOI matching, or spining/floing shafts.

The guy who started this post has what I would call - specialist requirements - which is why I recommended going to an independent; a service such as spining and floing a shaft would make a huge difference to this guy.

And just so everyone knows, I'm a professional clubfitter - but I'm not on here to push for sales. I'm a keen golfer myself, obviously and I love the banter and discussions on forums like these.

Finally, apologies for threadjacking!

Sorry didn't see/read the last sentence. Oban shafts can only (offically) be sold in a head from one of their accounts as opposed to just buying the shaft on its own - and they are expensive! Personally - without bias - I would have a look at SK Fiber; Matrix quality without the Matrix price tag!!

Agree 100%

I'd encourage MacAddy to contact you for a recommendation of one in his area.

Wasn't trying to be negative btw, just 'open'.

Didn't realise that about Oban.

SK. Is that what KJ Choi has on his hat? My first Matrix shaft was one of his cast-offs!

Oh, also forgot. No need to apologise. It was on-topic.

Apologise for hehaw m8.

It's your business and your only trying to help.

Glad I haven't offended anyone - I've only been a member for 24 hours and not even into double figure posts yet!!

Happy to recommend a local fitter who could help if the OP wants to contact me or tell me his area.

PS - I do know that Oban are used by Titleist but they are VERY expensive through them! My mate who is a Pro and sponsored by Titleist had to BEG them for one!!

@MGL

Dont apologise mate, we could do with more technical experts on here, if you have expertise in this field then fire away, i'm all ears.

we need to sort the wheat from the chaff

Good stuff mate. Welcome to the forum. And don't let the naysayers get you down !!

Cheers guys - much appreciated. Happy to answer any queries via PM also. I'll keep looking through the forum and contribute where I can.

MGL -- Which area of the Country are u located.......??

Essex - but I'm from Sunderland so you would end up with clubs that made you play worse as I'm assuming your a Newcastle Fan!!

Seriously, I'm moving back to Durham at Easter and will be setting up in the NE again. Send me a PM if there is anything you specifically want as I think I might be threadjacking again.
