What a difference a good Greenkeeper makes !!
Last October, my club brought in a new man in charge, a 'Master' Greensman, or summat similar, with high hopes for returning the course into pristine condition, perhaps one day even back to the standards of years gone by when we once even hosted a Seniors Tour event.

He sacked off the Agronomist, the eejit that had told us for ages that we didnt need to feed this or that, he's rebuilt/repaired/serviced all the equipment languishing in the sheds, and most importantly, he's totally refocused the rest of the ground staff, and really got them onside to get the course looking fab.

We endured the harshest winter for years, with the course closed for weeks on end, and yet, here we are, in late April, with the course looking absolutely superb, and the greens as good as I remember for years.

Sure, we need some rain, which will only improve it even further, but boy is it good so far.
Rumour has it he told the committee to wait a year before deciding on a 'correct' salary for him, and so far, I can see he'll have a strong case !!

Perhaps a lot of clubs way way underestimate the value of good Ground staff ?

My course is comimg along nicely as well. We've been using the sprinklers all week, April with the greens needing a drink!

Our greeny is putting the fact the course is in such good condition down the the fact that the course WAS shut for so long.

Get the right man and you are laughing....I would never, ever entertain agronomy companies....they are not exactly going to tell you everything is fine and produce a small report and therefore lessen their fees are they.....??

Haven't been to mine in over a week - the greens were horrific then. The rest of the course is looking very good - just hope they've been able to do something to the putting surfaces since last week...

I have never moved so fast in my life when I was playing golf at Machrie on Islay. I was in the rough on behind one of the greens when I happened to see this "thing" move between my legs out of the corner of my eye.

It was then that I noticed an adder gliding between my legs.

Boy did I jump and move, cat on a hot tin roof didn't come close.

Good to know you have still got that turn of speed when you need it Crawford. ;)

We have notices at the club warning of adders, and reminding golfers that they are not allowed to take a wedge to them.

;)

I played my place for the first time in nearly a month at the weekend. Was expecting the worst after being told that we'd had no rain whilst I'd been away. However, the greens were absolutely beautiful, and we were also playing off the 6 new tee boxes built over the winter. The course is looking great. We do need some rain to help the new seeded areas grow in though, so here's praying for a little, mostly overnight :-)

Course in good condition, although the greens had been cored and sanded. Adders on the fairways were more of a worry. :( :( :( :(

Yeah the Adders certainly seem to be out in force at the moment don't they. There have been multiple sightings at our place recently although not seen one yet myself.
