Back in the 1960's the premium ball was the Dunlop 65. It was a wound balata covered ball that developed a smile the first time you thinned it. It cost the earth and came in an individual box wrapped in shiny black paper. Once my father and I were joined by a new member who was very smartly dressed and had top of the range clubs. On the first tee he took out a brand new Dunlop 65 from its box, unwrapped it, tee'd it up and sliced it straight into the boating lake to the right of the fairway. Another two brand new Dunlop 65's followed it in. At this point my father suggested that perhaps he should use an old ball, to which he replied "I've never kept a ball long enough for it to get old!". We fell about laughing!I love the Srixon Soft Feel in the spring and for casual golf-great VFM and a good compromise.
When the season starts, I love Z Stars and Callaway i tours. I like Pro v s but I think they are overrated and expensive.
I rarely buy new balls, except with winnings - given how we lose them, it's not worth it. My mate, last year, put 4 brand new Prov s OOB off the tee, on the fly, on the same hole. I gave him 24 runs, but it cost him about 11 quid!!
