What a difference a ball can make

I love the Srixon Soft Feel in the spring and for casual golf-great VFM and a good compromise.
When the season starts, I love Z Stars and Callaway i tours. I like Pro v s but I think they are overrated and expensive.
I rarely buy new balls, except with winnings - given how we lose them, it's not worth it. My mate, last year, put 4 brand new Prov s OOB off the tee, on the fly, on the same hole. I gave him 24 runs, but it cost him about 11 quid!!
Back in the 1960's the premium ball was the Dunlop 65. It was a wound balata covered ball that developed a smile the first time you thinned it. It cost the earth and came in an individual box wrapped in shiny black paper. Once my father and I were joined by a new member who was very smartly dressed and had top of the range clubs. On the first tee he took out a brand new Dunlop 65 from its box, unwrapped it, tee'd it up and sliced it straight into the boating lake to the right of the fairway. Another two brand new Dunlop 65's followed it in. At this point my father suggested that perhaps he should use an old ball, to which he replied "I've never kept a ball long enough for it to get old!". We fell about laughing! :D

Well I have to say my putting today was completely different to yesterday. Nailed a long birdie putt on the 2nd and distance control a huge improvement. Played a Bridgestone Fixx which isn't as nice off the club as an E6 but a decent "budget" ball. Really got me wondering about the Soft Feel now so will compare again next week and see if the results are similar on the greens.

I think there's a big difference between Urethane and Non-Urethane covered balls around the green. That is the big difference for me. On full swings some feel softer and some feel firmer, but performance is more or less the same.

Around the greens the increased Spin and Soft Feel of the Urethane Balls is really noticeable to me. I don't feel confident with lower end balls around the green, as they seem to jump of the club face and roll out too much, they don't offer as much control.

With regards to which Premium Ball, they differ in terms of firm/soft feel, and it's a matter of preference. I am using the Pro V1x at the moment, I really like it but I'll be evaluating lower cost Urethane alternatives again in a few weeks as my first child is due in a fortnight! Might go back to the Hex Chrome or Bridgestone B330-RX/RXS, but really interested in how the AD333 Tour Performs when it's released.

I do agree with many on here though, Nike premium balls have been awful the last few years, I'd be intrigued to see if this years are any better.
