Had one of those EURIKA moments today

had an hour spare so wemt to the range at Wycombe Heights.
I have been struggling with a wicked slice when driving in recent weeks, The odd one went straight, but most didnt.

Had a chat with one of the teaching Pro's who came out to assist me.

The problem was that the ball was too far forward in my stance so that by the time the club face had reached the ball, it had rotated causing a slice.

By repositioning the ball 2 inches to the right, the problem went away.

I hit the next 20 balls pretty straight, which for me is a minor miracle.

Another piece of the jigsaw falls into place

Wish I hadn't read this! :( I would have thought if the club had (over?)rotated then the club face would be closed and set the ball off left :D :D

I had a similar problem (either slice or hook) and moving the ball back in the stance was also a big part of fixing the problem, but the way I understood it (could of course be mis-understood it! lol) is that with the ball too far forward the clubhead was cutting across the ball with either with the club face open, producing a slice or closed, producing the hook.

Where's Bob or James when ya need em!

I was doing this too until a pro pointed out that me foot width was wider for the driver so my left foot was actually outside my left shoulder.

He advised me to align the ball to the upper half of my body (in the left armpit area) and retain the wider stance for added stability.

I think I'd picked the bad ball position up from a magazine too while trying to cure a slice - turns out I made it worse!!!

moving the ball back in your stance helps a slice because alot of people focus on squaring the club face at impact which is good but if your ball position is to far forward your impact will come after you have started to open your shoulders which moves the club head from outside in causing rotation to be passed to the ball.

just thought i would put that in for those who were puzzled about how it works.

Whereditgo you are right. It's nothing to do with the clubface over rotating. A slice (the massive curve spin you get on a ball flight) is caused by the swingpath in relation to the clubface.

Cut across the ball too much and you're going to get a huge amount of slice spin. Move the ball back a little you cut a cross it less and get less spin*... however you leave the clubface a little more open than it already was too... so now you still hit them into the trees on the right only with a little less spin :D

(*Play it off your back foot and it's practically impossible to swing across it at all without hitting your own legs.. slice fixed) ;)
