Westwood, the new Monty!!!

I think time is running out for poor Lee. Although I don't watch a lot of golf tournaments (I only have pauper t.v.) he seems to lose his way in the last round. He just gets overtaken by some "hot" player every time.
He has been brilliant for a while now and could still do it, but one has to think that every time it happens (coming up short), it's another nail in the coffin.
I'm a huge fan and hope my fears are unjustified.

Why is he the best player without a major??

Cos his arse hangs oot when the BIG questions get asked...fine and dandy winning a race to Dubai but a major or even a Players are a different exam paper and one so far he has failed to pass I'm afraid toonarmy.

While I feel for Westwood, falling at the final hurdle again. I don’t think he can be compared with Monty. At present Westwood holds No 3 in the world rankings, his best position. Monty was No 1, he won 8 order of merits and was never found wanting when it came to the Ryder Cup. Sorry but even if you don’t like him you have to admit that big Monty was a character. Maybe Westwood can get there. Maybe he will fulfil the promise, but at the moment he isn’t in the same league.

For a top pro his short game is shocking, watched him on the 16th trying to scoop it out the bunker like someone who's never played golf before.

It must be a mental thing the last round he seems to come undone, his driving goes then thats it,its like a typical PGA Tour mentallity we dont need to win theres plenty cash for a top 10,a shame really, maybe needs to get away from Chandler and all the hangers on.

All Pro's have a weakness in their game, TW in his poor driving, Rory is his poor putting and Lee's is his chipping and bunker play.

Eh, nope.

His best was world number 2 and that was before Tiger came on the scene.

Monty dominated his own back yard and was prolific in the Ryder Cup ... does that sound famliar.

Nope...prolific in the Ryder Cup but he's hardly 'Dominated' the way great Moon Heed did.

I think everyone is missing why he's struggled at both Augusta and Sawgrass. His driving has been ropey as hell in both when it comes to the last two rounds and he's been in the lead. He's put himself in the 'ming' far too many times with the big dog.
He needs to get a stock shot when the pressure is on.

Dodger, I agree that Westwood has not had the same level of success as Monty but my comparison was more towards both of them floundering on the PGA tour whilst experiencing success in Europe and in The Ryder Cup.

would like to think it's only a matter of time before westwood wins a major...he's too good a golfer and he's only 36 so he has plenty of time to sort his short game out because in my opinion it's rank & thats whats letting him down....

I dont think he'll be a prolific major winner, but I think he will come good in a major. He contends to often not too.

Looking at major winners line Cink, Glover, Yang etc, you can hardly say Westwood is a worse player than any of those.

as for your comment of pulling out injured we shall see if you are saying the same when rooney limps off with groin problem at the world cup.

If Rooney 'limps off' with a groin strain after missing two penalties, an open goal, England are 8-0 down and he's got a face like a bulldog licking pish off a nettle - then it'll be a fair comparison.

Westwood went out to 200+ in the World rankings and, despite being more than comfortable, proceeded to wrench himself into the top 5 within a couple of years.

Oh yes, he's a choker alright. :D

He's the best player in the world without a Major and all the top pros concur...but what do they know compared to the mighty knowledge of the GM forum scribes?

Aye of course when someone is playing badly you have to have a massive smile on your face.

So the best player without a major fell to 200+ in the world, classy.

On the masters and the players yes he is a choker how cant he be???

I like Westwood but i dont think he should be portrayed as this top player when he cant seal the deal....

He's been in the lead going in to the last round at the Dubia Desert Classic,Masters and Players and failed to win any...when he's in contention going in to the Back 9 on sunday his game seems to be found wanting under the extra pressure.

You took the words out of my mouth. soon as I saw him with that shirt on at The Masters, I knew it was curtains. Like saying 'I'm the new Tiger' - asking for trouble. He should leave it until he's defending a title, not going for it. Having said that I hope he does make the grade one of those days. Thought he just peaked too soon at Augusta whereas Mickelson had something left for the final charge - and maybe less to lose.

To win any tournament you just need to have 'one of those days' on the greens.... it's really anyones guess but the best putters often shine through... Mickelson, Woods, Stricker etc etc,... and Westwood isn't too bad. He just had a poor round. I don't think he choked or anything bad, in fact I think he did well to stay in contention for as long as he did. You create your own luck in this game. It was Tim Clark's day to have a hot putter.... that's all.

Isn't it funny how the focus is always on the guy who lost the lead and never the guy who kept the head down and carded the best score. We all know about Jean Vander Velde in 1999 but does anyone recall what Paul Lawries final round was?

Mickelson played some wonderful golf on tha last day of The Masters and Clark did the same. I think sitting 1-2 off the lead going into the final round could be like an away goal in footy.
