For those of you who know how far you hit different types of shots with your wedges...

As an example, you hit your full PW 120, and a 3/4 swing goes 100yds.
You hit your full SW 90 yards. Is the 3/4 swing 60yds (same % diff), or 70 (same yds diff)?

Or is there no relation between the same shots with different clubs?

I wasn't asking for my own game really. Just bored and trying to think of a question to ask.

I'll try harder next time.

I prefer to try and hit 3/4 wedge shots as I get more control. My 52 goes about 75 yards and my 58 goes about 60. If I have to hit a fuller shot I can get 80 or so out of my 52 but I don't seem to squeeze much more with my 58. I guess its because its not designed for an out and out full shot.

i say try not to play 1/2 or 3/4 swings because although you dont hit it as far you dont usually consider spin and therefore wont end up stopping near the pin

Wow. You have a lot to learn about the short game :D

Don't really use 3/4- 1/2 distances just know full swing distances and work it out from there.

Spin makes a big difference you may spin it back 4 or 5 yards with a full shot and the ball may release with a half swing. Then we go on to how hard the greens are. So you can see why I really only use full swing distances, really there are to many variables if you are not practicing your short game every day.

The reality is that there will always be occasions where a full swing is simply too much, if you dont practice all the shots you are likely to need, you will most certainly regret not knowing how far a 1/4,1/2, or 3/4 swing will get you from time to time.

So, taking your post to mean that you know your yardages, is your 3/4 (or any other swing) swing the same percentage (ish) of your full swing across all your short clubs, or are they all over the place with no rhyme or reason?

Well I have learned many different ways to hit balls with a reduced swing, but if we are talking a basic golf shot where the ball position is the same in each case.......
I hit a full SW 75 to 80, with 3/4 swing its 60 to 70, with a half swing its 45 to 50 and with 1/4 swing its 20 to 30.
If I need something in between I use a different club or different stance or club head position or ball address position. In answer to the question you just posed, I know how far I hit a ball with various types of shot and/or club (providing I am having a good session in relation to my capabilities), but I am not going to list them all, but the idea that most golfers know their yardages to the yard, I find pretty humorous :D maybe a few very experienced ones might but the average h/capper could hit the same full wedge 100 times and be lucky to have 50 balls in a 20 yd circle, so I am always a little sceptical about such posts and their objective? ;) :p After the question is asked will people give you their best days best shot result, or their frequent worst or a reasonable average?

As far as relationship goes, I dont believe any golfers who gave a genuine account would collectively give you a result worth basing much on. ;)

Here you go, here's the table I carry in my head !!

...............3/4......Full

58deg........70.......N/A

52 deg.......85.......100

PW...........110......125

For me the trouble is I dont really know the distance to the flag, I dont have a laser finder and I'm not good at estimating yards so every wedge shot for me has an element of guesswork.

Get yourself a GPS and practice with the wedges and shots :D

I know how far I hit a wedge, I need to get a range finder really to take the guess work out of the shots. :D
Which is why I suggested a gps.
Are you going to Sth Leeds next Sun?, assuming it is on the list, i'll download the course and you can have a look at mine.

There are times when you need to hit your lobber full tilt. A few years ago I played a course that had a green sloping away from me. I was also playing into the wind. With about 50 yards to go I blasted my 58 wedge so high that the wind stopped it, the spin took over and I actually spun it back up the hill and nearly in the hole.

Imagination is the route to a good short game.

I am hoping to, I have a second round winter league to play Sunday. If I can get an early enough time to get that in and get to South Leeds I will be there. Thanks for the help.

The reason I thought of the question is that I started to measure my own last night. I wasn't after stealing anyones sums, just curious.
Went to the club about 6.30, walked up the first fairway and hit balls into the green. I placed a ball at each pitchmark (after I'd repaired it) then measured to the middle of the balls, ignoring any stragglers.

My 9 iron was 136 with a full swing, 122 with a 3/4 swing (same stance), and 115 with a 3/4 swing and narrow open stance.

3 more times up there and I hoping I'll have 12 yardages that won't overlap too much :)
