Before seeing Zac Johnson chipping from the green I must confess I didn't even know you are allowed to do it. Mainly for saving the green from becoming a minefield.

Have you ever done it?

Personally I would be very reluctant to play such a shot because I'm sure that would be the time I take a foot long divot.

i've never had to do it myself but i''ve seen it done a few times on the tele.

adam scott did it at the presidents cup whilst playing with choi.at the third choi put the ball to the back of the green and the way the pin was placed the bunker was in the way of the line....so he chose to chip it over.the result wasn't as good as zach johnson's chip.

take's a lot of guts to play a shot like that especially in those circumstances,he used his 60* wedge for it.

The story of Mark Calcavecchia taking a big divot with a sand wedge at Troon (?) in the Open, reportedly said : "It was 75 yards -for me that's a sand wedge"

I might be mistaken, as is often my wont

Did it a few times when I was a member at St Andrews. Have you seen the size of the bloody greens there on some holes. The distance I had sometimes on those greens would have probably taken a good putt to just get within 3-putt range......

I too thought this wasn't allowed - learn something new every day !

You can only do it on the hole you are playing. If you hit the ball onto an adjacent green you have to take a free drop at the nearest point of relief, it's a 2 shot penalty otherwise.

did it a few time at the old course when i played it. Had one of those sabre tooth putters, the ball went nowhere on longs putts so used a 9 iron bump and run on a few of the greens.

On the Par 5 5th I was actually closer to the 13th flag on that double green. My mate paced it out and it was about 45 yards. Yes it was was a bad shot before someone mentions it... took too much club and pulled the arse off of it.....:o

Thanks. I knew the drop from other greens rule and for some reason just assumed putters only to be used on greens. I'm better with an 8 iron chip and run than a long putt most times but would be fearful of catching it fat and probably thin it a mile through the green!

With my chipping I'd be in short game purgatory, thinning and fatting all over the shop to get within three stab range. I'd make it look like herd of elephants had played rugby all over the place. Try finding the line on your putt now.

I've seen it done by the pros a few times but never seen any of my partners brave enough to take it on
