Hi All

First post - new to the forum :D

I’ve played golf since I was a kid (now 27) but football has been my main priority up until recently and I’ve decided my body can’t take the physical demands anymore due to various injuries. Now that I’ve got my life back, I’m going to give it to golf !

I’ve just been fitted for my first ever set of new irons, a driver and a hybrid, and I’m not sure what to fill my bag with now. The irons are 5-GW , GW is 50 degrees. Should I be looking for a 54 deg sand wedge and 58 degree lob wedge ? I assume getting fitted for these will be beneficial due to the different types of loft/bounce combinations ?

I also recently bought a KS1 putter from Costco Just to try it out and while it does feel really good compared to my ancient cobra, I’d like to try other putters to compare it to. What should I be looking at in a similar price bracket ?

Apologies for the long post!

I have that set up and I recently ditched a 54 and 58 in favour of just a 56

Covers a range of shots

I found that full shots with 54 were fine and a full shot with 58 I could just use a reduced 54

So 56 just made more sense

Thank you, I didn’t think of that. I suppose if I got the correct bounce it would be suitable for all kinds of shots including from the bunkers ?

Yeah defo

I got myself a Cleveland cbx 2 last week. Has 12 degree bounce. Really works well out of bunkers and works off fairway

As per most replies you definitely should have something more lofted for round the greens and bunkers.

The bounce should suit the bunkers where you play the most
Deep soft sand - high bounce 12/14
Hard pan shallow sand 8/10

I would look at 54 and 58 degree wedges to give an equal spacing. I certainly wouldn't go as far as a 60 degree as I found from experience it cost more shots than it saved. I would also look at the top end and filling the gap between driver and hybrid

You only have 10 clubs by my calculations so yes add another couple of wedges. I wouldn't limit myself to just a 56, go for 54 and 58 or 60 to give yourself more options. Also consider the top of your bag as well. Possibly a 3 wood and either a 5 wood or a stronger hybrid.

I have just taken 56/60 degree wedges out of my bag in put in the Taylormade Hi Toe Bigfoot 60 degree wedge with 15 degree bounce - will use in all bunker/around green situations that I would previously have used the other two wedges. Found I was rarely using the 56 degree & thought the extra bounce on the new wedge would provide a one club fits all for most scenarios.
If the high bounce proves an issue for occasional hard pan / tight lies, will have to use my gap wedge that has 7 degree bounce.

What did your fitter advise for the wedges? He's seen your swing, so should have a much better idea of what sort of bounce might suit your swing.

Definitely worth getting a (specialist?) Pro/Fitter check out your action and recommend a style of wedge - for you and where you play!
Otherwise, it's a case of (expensive and frustrating) trial and error!

Btw. WRT wedges, it pays to absorb, then (pretty much) ignore, what others have decided is right for them! That's because the last (bold) words are crucial!

Thanks for all the suggestions !

regards the top of the bag.. my new irons are TM sim max with the lofts softened a degree, 5iron is 22.5deg and hybrid is 19deg. Will possibly look at adding another hybrid to fill the gap between the driver as I fell in love with the ping g410 (driver and hybrid) at the fitting. Patiently waiting for everything to arrive ?

We just focused on irons and driver/hybrid the last few sessions, so will get in touch to look at the wedges when I next get paid as I have been skinned this month!

Don't be in a hurry to buy clubs.
When you start playing regularly, it will become obvious where the gaps are.
Maybe get a 56 SW to start with, and take it from there
