Broke my MacG' 7 iron.

Looking for 565

or even 455

Preferably with YS design graphite stiff (like, needle in a haystack!) but reg steel of any sort also would be fine.

I phoned DG and they have hundreds (no joke) of MacGregor individual irons (clear out presumably, as MacG' are not exactly "trading" anymore) but no 7 irons in my local store.

If anyone should see one, please think of me!!!!

If I get down to the 'red shed' (discount store) I will have a look for you, always odds and ends knocking about down there.

t.b.h. I'm going to 'phone all the DG stores to see if there are any left anywhere. I'll get a price from my local range to re-shaft, but it'll probably not be anything other than a regular graphite from bog-standards-ville..

I'd take anything useable, an old X-14/18 or Mizuno MX type would do the job....

ebay checked.

I spoke to Giles at DG Wirral (v.v.helpful guy) and he checked the whole of the DG network.

They are selling off these 455 and 565 irons individually now and he knows someone that *tried* to make a set out of irons at £4.99 each.....but there are no 7's

Just my luck.....off to get a bog standard or any other 7 iron with the right loft.

Yes, he can do it, but it would be un-matching, not bad, but not ideal.

However, I drove to a DG (1 1/2 round hour trip) and picked up a single iron with the exact same shaft. This new iron shaft can be cut to 7 iron length and fitted....

Unless something goes wrong (there's always an element of risk with graphite) I should have an identical replacement in by early next week.....

Fingers crossed.... :)

Dave, what I would do is but a 3 or 4 iron from DG and take it to your pro and ask him to take it out, trim it and put it in your 7 iron. :)

Spot on mate. Done!

This episode has got me looking into club re-shafting/re-gripping and I've learned some interesting stuff.

It would seem that iron shafts come in a set all 40" long and then they are cut at both ends (tip trim and butt trim) to the manufacturers recommendation.

There seems to be some argument over tip trimming. One suggestion (from the fitter) was to tidy up the tip of my existing shaft (2-3cm short), as it was broken at the hosel and then put a bung in the butt end.....

Safest option (as ever, even for a dodgy golfer) is clearly to take a longer shaft if the right size is not available and work out how much to take from both ends....might take some elementary maths to work out how to change a 3 iron (already cut) and make it exactly the same as a 7 iron!!

I'm intrigued though.....I saw a few steel shafted MacGregors and the head looks the same.....is there a way to use either in the same head, or are the hosels actually forged to a different spec?

Dave, I've just been through this with my rifle shaft 565 PW, trees and clubs don't mix.
tbh, I never thought of looking for an odd club - looks like it would have been the cheaper option. Certainly never saw any online.

I went to DesignerGolf at Desborough. Learned a lot about clubs, shafts and the whole fitting process. He couldn't get the identical shaft (True Temper bought up Royal Precision and have trashed all Precision Rifle shaft jigs except Project X) but used my 9 to match it.

I got a mini-fitting session out of it, I need longer shafts, mid-kick and have found the one I want - just need to save for a set of Nippon 905 shafts.
(Interesting fact No.1001 - Nippon shafts have no discernible spine. No. 1002 - Nippon make the only constant weight shafts)

Oh, as to your original question. The heads are identical whether shafted with graphite or steel, either made for 370 parallel or 355 tapered.

(And, virtually, all 7-iron heads, no matter what make or shape are within 2 grams of each other, including the 'hybrid' types - he proved it).

Wow....top reply mate!!!

I'm "tapping my fingers" in anticipation of the call from the club-fitter to get my 7 iron back.

Total cost expected at £8 diesel (two hours of time) £5 club and £(?) repair.....certainly the most expedient result and probably the cheapest.

I shan't buy graphite again, in the old days, if I broke a shaft or needed to replace a rusty old/bent one, it was a half-day job at the pro shop and a new Dynamic Gold....

Besides, my swing speed is up and my striking is way better than a year ago, so graphite is not necessary anymore. I have enjoyed these clubs hugely though, even if I'm finding them a bit chunky these days.

In the 3-7 they are great, but the short irons are not to my taste.....
