The Avro Vulcan made what is probably its last ever appearance at a public air display today. Ive seen it many times before but its still a fantastic plance to see.

I think it will be missed.

I have actually been in XH558 while it was in active service. Thankfully it was on the ground and I was just being shown where the fatigue meter was sited.

Cheers for this Phil - totally forgot about it

As a teenager one used to fly over my house on a daily basis. They were testing the hedgehopper radar avoidance.
It went low over the sea then came up to clear the hill.
I lived on the top of the hill.:o

I don't really understand why people get all misty eyed about these. Can someone explain?

It will depend on if you are fan of engineering and the history behind the aircraft

It first started flying in 1952 - at that time it was outstanding engineering - way ahead of time

It then became a symbol of our defiance and protection during the Cold War - along with the other V bombers - Victor and Valiant.

It was a wonderful aircraft to be in but so hard to fly for the pilot

Then when it was looking to be retired it had its final swansong - the Falklands , it was key to winning the air battle by destroying Stanley Runway and also radar sites

It is an icon in our Military air history alongside the likes of the BoB flight

It was wonderful to hear and see it fly and it's such a shame that it won't fly again

I was on Christmas Island in 1958 for some of the Nuclear testing, Operation Grapple.
I seem to recall one landing during my posting there, a fabulous sight and sound.
We were more used to seeing the Victors as I believe they actually flew the A bomb testing missions, almost as iconic an aircraft.
Exciting for an 18 year old.
Incidentally Phill the RAF were the administrators for all the services on the Island, best catering I ever had in my 3 years apart from Ts Dunera going out there.

Mega program... Especially, as on this occasion, GuyM allowed the real stars of the show centre stage...

Dad flew Lancasters and learnt, from the program, the same person that designed that great 'plane drew up the concept of the Vulcan.. So, a learning day as well...

To think when I first started playing golf at Dunbar, south east Scotland, the Vulcan was a regular sight every other day doing practice runs over the sea, up Belhaven bay, to then do a boost of power and a quick turn back out to sea again. At the time we thought nothing of it.

During the withdrawal from Hong Kong I was in HMS Chatam and we stopped off at Christmas Island

Still got lots of signs of old RAF memorabilia around the airport. The old NAAFI is a shop

The guys from the mobile catering are superb chefs - a god send in theatre
