How are we defining "better"

To be honest, I didn't think we were defining "better". It was just a discussion about what people preferred until Miura were thrown into the equation and it all got a bit silly.

There is no best, it's just about opinions not petty arguing over something that it is impossible to quantify and for that reason, for this thread, I'm out!

Try giving it a rest and stop trying to spin it out even more.

My choice, my money, END of story.

thats true !

I've got a serious question !! (I know)

Does having a top end wedge set up affect your choice of ball??? On your sig it mentions you'll play with anything, but to my mind there is no point owning a Ferrari and running it on diesel.

Nope....unless I was playing in a comp in which case i'd use a decent ball.

Its a moot point tho, because at the moment I don't play competitions.

Can we ask why?

Yep, I only joined my club in July. The aim for this year was simply to improve and also get a few lessons.

Next year was always my target to start entering comps to see how my handicap has improved.

So, you want to enter competitions with a playing handicap of 27 knowing you could play lower than it?

Nope, I've already clarified with the pro at my club regarding supplementary cards.

Why would I want to do what you insinuate?

This is a each to their own answer.
As long as the club you choose inspires confidence, that is all that matters.
I changed from Vokeys about a year and a half ago.to Ping Tour S wedges.
I loved them both, not straight away, but after a bit of practice.
If i had to choose between both i would choose the Pings.
These are the only 2 wedges ive ever used.

With not knowing about your supp cards (......You didn't state), it seemed you wanted to lower your scores to considerably below playing HC and enter competitions.

Well that's how I read it anyway. Apologies for any insinuation and offence caused.

No offence taken.

If I ever win a competition, I would want it to be because I deserved to win, not because of any unfair advantage.

Mine does :DPrice doesn't really come into the figuring when I look at equipment. I go with what I like, hence me spending £210 on my Scotty. Are there better putters out there, probably. Better for me, I don't think so.
Gareth, out of interest, were u fitted for the scotty........?? Cos, if Not........ Im like u, in the fact that I dont look at price tags (1st) I always take the club on looks, as if it dont suit my eye Id never buy, regardless of what it was But, even though I have 2 Vega wedges in my bag, the MOST EXPENSIVE Wedge Ive ever bought was a Cleveland 900 black wedge

Yes Moogie. Fitted for my measurements and my stroke.

I reviewed it a while back.

http://forums.golf-monthly.co.uk/showthread.php?36821-My-putter-fitting

Interestingly, during that fitting, I was torn between the Scotty and the Rife.

Rife make excellent putters and would have been happy to take that one and it was £70(...ish) cheaper than the Scotty, so why choose a putter that has negligable difference but costs more. Simple, I trusted what the fitter said.

I got the ball closer more consistantly with the Scotty than the Rife. If you're Miura gets you closer than a Vokey, or Mizzy, or any other wedge, from greenside or <100 yards then you've chosen well.

If, however, you're no closer to the hole than with A.N.Other, is it worth the extra outlay?

Was just curious, as Im considering a Putter fitting in New Year, as a treat to myself, never done before, and this season I feel putting has cost me a couple of lifts...............Ive got many a Putter, various shapes/sizes/brands, but just all chosen by eye and what like look of (and feel)............................and P.S.............I DONT own a Miura :-)

How are we defining "better"
Surely the only way is via Stats' and the scorecard.
Personally, all I know is I could have the most expensive wedge in the world, hand crafted by Japan's finest metallurgists but if I don't practice in the back garden every other night my short game instantly goes down the pan, and I'll duff and top that wedge just like any other.

To be honest, I didn't think we were defining "better"!

It was just a Rhetorical question hence the lack of a question mark.
I know there's no better or best, if there was I probably wouldn't use it anyway.

I would definatley recommend a fitting

I "thought" I knew what I wanted. If you read my thread you'll see I wasn't even close

Miura are not a mass market product in the way that the main OEM's are and aren't interested in pursuing a yearly (i.e. r11, r11s, r1, etc) or two yearly (i.e. BB04, BB06, BB08) production cycle to chase revenue. Technology in golf clubmaking simply does not move that fast.

When I was in the US doing some of my clubmaking training (the best country to do it bar none), I visited the Miura HQ after becoming a certified fitter for them and I met with Adam Barr who is their president. In his office are the 'Titleist' irons that Tiger used to win a couple of his majors with, that were forged by Miura using their processes and metals - in the Titleist moulds. Whilst I did not personally see any of his 'Nike', I am certain from what I was told that most of his early Nikes were not in fact Nikes.

I've also seen the half finished last set of irons that Tom Wishon was making for Payne Stewart when he died - Wishon had been through about 5 personal fittings with Stewart at this point and was still nowhere near finished. There are some Taylormade made irons that are actually Miura, as are some Macgregors. Miura did contract work for high end heads before striking out on his own. He never has paid anyone to play his clubs nor would he need to in the future.

Most pro's I know would play ANYTHING if it was given to them for nothing. They EXPECT things for nothing.

I haven't as long a list of wedges as Moogie has but I have been able to tell the difference in some of the more exotic brands. They don't actually cost that much more than something like a Vokey to be honest but there is a lot of brand negativity around the likes of the exotic makes which from most of the posts I read on here, is plain daft.

Find something you like the feel of - and accept that feel is a personal thing to you - and get on with it and don't bash other people for being different. Personally, I don't think Vokeys are the product they were a few years back, ever since Bob cashed in his chips and sold out to Tittylest; in the same way that I don't think Scotties are the same as they were either.

Now, should I start a thread called "Scotty".........????????????????????????

Great read, but i think you are farting against thunder as far as these narrow minded people on here go. Cant wait to get my new Miura driver, it looks the dogs baws hahahahahahaha
