for us high handicappers..

is the subject of shafts. Mostly we all buy a driver and it comes with a shaft, a head and a grip and off we go and hit the ball with it.
After a while on this forum I realise that others are removing the head then using that head on a number of different shafts to produce different results. I have a Nike SQ and I dont think the head actually comes off!

So some of you guys buy a driver, then immediately switch the shaft for something else, and perhaps even change the standard grip. It does make me wonder if manufacturers will ever start selling just the head?

It also puts me in mind of Trigger in Only Fools and Horses, when he said he had his broom for 20 years, mind you it has had 9 new handles and 7 new heads !!!

If you have your clubs custom fit. Then the right shaft will be fitted for you from the off. There are some places that will sell just the heads (Gamola is one). Also it does mean you can buy cheap secondhand. Then have shaft to suit fitted. Etan on here is a marvel when it comes to shafts. Grips should be changed ever 12 months, or sooner if you play a lot.

a lot of the new clubs have a sleeve fitted because the clubhead can be changed for different face angle and loft etc so changing shafts yourself hasn't been so easy.as for the old method the majority of people will buy a driver with the right shaft fitted and usually thats a case of whether they need stiff or regular.

i personally have only used stiff and haven't tried to buy a shaft that was specific for low launch etc with a different kick point etc......it all gets confusing as you say but for high handicap players i would just stick with either a regular shaft or stiff depening on swing speed and thats it.

It is down to the adjustable clubs avaiable now you can swap a shaft in 2 mins by unscrewing the shaft and fitting another provided it has the correct tip.

I guess for a lot of high handicapper, the shaft isn't high on priorities and most won't look furhter than regular or stiff depending on swing speed. To a certain degree while you are still struggling with consistancy that isn't the end of the world but once you hit a driver and find more fairways perhaps it is time to re-think. Most pros will be able to order a club in with the shaft you want but unless yo can go and try different flex, kick points etc how do you kow how each will perform. Its a bit of a chicken and egg scenario unless you go downt he C/F route

I have an adjustable driver. I also have two shafts for it. I'm guessing, but I figure by February I will have at least four shafts for it. It takes a minute to swap them out. I like changing things. I have good and bad days, days when I rip it, days when I swing easy, days when I hit it high, low, fade, draw etc. A bad day with the driver, I swap the shaft, change the feel, can't do any harm. I get bored quite quickly.

At the moment I have two, a Heavy shaft, and a light one. Can't really say I hit either better.

I have been custom fit before. That fits me for the swing I have on the day. I have about ten swings. One shaft will not fit all.
