Is this considered cheating?

A guy who I play with, when making a putt will ajust his ball and line the logo up with the hole, is he cheating?

The short answer..........no
The long answer...........nooooooooooooooooooooo :D

I could understand if he was picking his ball up and marking it but if we are not playing in a comp he won't bother unless it in the path of other balls and asked.

You can do what you want with the ball on the green, while you have a marker in place behind it, but take that marker away, and the ball is in play and cannot be touched/moved again, unless you put down your marker again.

I do this on every green i putt on now, but ALWAYS with a marker behind the ball. My putting has improved significantly since i started doing this. It forces me to take my time and line the putt up properly.

Never without a marker though.

I've recently started doing this, (within the rules), and am finding it useful. It's one skill to judge the line, it's another to have a smooth stroke and send the ball in the direction you intend. I judge the line and position my ball accordingly so all I have to do then is try and hit it at the right strength and along the line on the ball.

Still hardly ever goes in!

Might be an idea for you to mention to him to start marking his ball all the time as he could get so used to doing this in a bounce game that he could forget to mark his ball in a comp and get a penalty...

Worth noting that the Rules of Golf do not require the ball to be marked with a ball marker, they only advise this. It is entirely legal to mark with the toe of a putter when lining up the logo like this and I've seen many people do this.

There is nothing in the rules to prevent you from using your granny to mark your ball, providing she stays still, its fine. :D

Nothing wrong with using the logo providing as others have mentioned he is marking the ball when he does so. I use to be fastidious about using the line on the side of a Pro V and spent more time making sure that was pointing at the hole than worrying about speed or break. I still use the line (don't like looking at the makers name over a putt) but not overly fussed on it being 100% accurate now. I just make sure my basics (grip and stance) are good and I've picked my spot and then trust my stroke and feel

Well if its not in a Comp, it hardly matters, but if in a Comp, the rules of Golf say 'he's cheating'.

End of. No Marker, no Touchy.

I'd love to pick someone up on this during a round, not sure if I'd have the balls to say "Ahem, that's loss of hole mate... let's go to the next hole, is that me 5 up?" :D

I'd probably get a smack in the chops and spat on in the clubhouse :p

Have recently started marking my ball using the a ball marking device.
This has improved my putting no end.Lining up the putter(mine has a an image of two golf balls with a line marking)with the line marked on the ball, allows you to concentrate on the weight of the putt.

Am fraid there is. A ball marker has to be "a ball-marker, a small coin or other similar object immediately behind the ball". Your granny don't fit that decription - especially when you check the decisions book. On the other hand, there is a specific absence of mention of grannies so perhaps...
