Upgrading my clubs

So, I started golfing two years ago and I am really starting to get into it. As a result I am looking to slowly throughout the year upgrade my clubs, currently I have nearly a whole R7 CGB Max set bought under advisement from a friend.

My clubs are
R7 CGB Max Driver / #3 wood
R7 21' Hybrud
R7 CGB Max Irons 4-SW (Graphite Regular)
Newport 2

====
So as you can see, I pretty much went the TaylorMade route and I am probably going to continue for the most part unless otherwise advised.

My primary concern is my Irons, I bought them with Regular Graphite shafts against the better advice I was given and I now understand why. The shaft is just so flexible and bendy and it just removes all my confidence in the club at address.

I have been looking at the Burner 2.0's and the R9's, both with stiff steel shafts. So I was wondering if any of you have used these clubs, and what your opinions of them are especially with regards to a high handicap player.

Thank you in advance

Go get custom fitted. At most places that do it its free if you buy clubs from the shop and they will help you find the ideal clubs for your game. No guesswork involved.

Search online for a driving range near you that has a shop that does custom fitting.

I'm sure you'll get some great advice on here but if you want to read about my recent fitting at the Ping centre in Gainsborough it's in the Review Forum: £30 for an hour and a half, worth many times more than that. Not sure where you're located so may be too far, but regardless I think players of any standard would benefit from a professional fitting. Ping obviously restricts you to their range of clubs (not that that's a problem as their clubs are awesome), but there are other places where you can chose from many different brands, but just be careful they don't sell you the latest special offer to shift old gear or something very pricey for the commission. Personally I needed to be able to see where the ball went as well as trust the technology, so my feeling would be to find a fitter that has a range you can shoot into rather than a net, but folk on here might disagree on that one? I guess if you're a better golfer you know whats a good hit and what isnt, I'm in such a transition stage I needed to be able to see the ball flight in reality as well as virtually. Either way, I'm sure if you're fit by a proper pro it'll improve your game, most of all your confidence which seems to be lacking in those clubs - and once that goes you're really up against it (I know!).

I live in Hull in Yorkshire, with http://www.onestopgolf.co.uk/ driving range round the corner.

They have all the fancy witchcraft and wizardry to do custom fitting, cost is an issue though. Being able to get the clubs on eBay (only from power sellers, no fakes) at £100 less is a motivator.

Also, I notice most new Iron sets stop at PW. Does this mean I would need to buy a Wedge or Two to replace my Approach and Sand Wedges?

I am going to be elitist and say there are only 3 brands of golf equipment(for me), Titleist, Mizuno & Ping. These brands make equipment that feels alive and offer the most custom fit options that todays smart investor demands.

Burner irons are magic. The 2.0s nice and if they're an improvement on my 09s then they must be good.

As for shaft flex, you'll need to try them and see. My swing isn't slow by any means but went with regular after trying them.

I like the TM clubs and think the Burner 2.0 and the R9 would definitely do a job for you but you'd need to find the shaft that works best for you, whether that is down the C/F road or not.

Of the rest out there, I'd look at the Mizuno JPX 800 pro and the MP53, the Ping G and I15. To be fair there is plenty of other choices to be had and half the fun of getting new clubs is in the trying out so don't let my opinion put you off. Try before you buy though ideally on a range so you can see how they fly rather than relying on a computer image on a screen

Hull's not far from Gainsborough :-)

I agree completely chap, I picked up my wedge, putter and bag from ebay for a fraction of what they would have cost me in the shops I tried them in, but when it came to the irons and big dog I bit the bullet and I'm glad I did. Yes you could go get fit for certain clubs and pick them up much cheaper, but you'll find the better brands really do hold their value. Even if somethings on auction for £100 now doesnt mean itll finish at that! I had a look at the G15s I was fit for and A. I couldnt have gotten them anyway as my grip size is fairly unique and B. i would have maybe saved £150 max, about £50 on the driver, in my case it was my Christmas present to me and an unusual splurge but whenever I get out on the course I know Ive got top quality at my disposal and it means a lot when confidence is the main factor. I'd say spend as much as you can afford to and get quality, we spend a lot of our downtime on the course and you want to enjoy it, not mess up and have a niggling doubt that its the clubs fault and not yours :-)

As for your last point, depends on what brand but yeah the traditional 3-SW is not always upheld, sometimes you only see 5-PW and hybrid longer clubs, sometimes different wedges. THere are many quality wedges on the market, if you do pick up a set to 9i find out what the loft is and try to match your individually bought wedge (s) to that, I'm sure you'll get far more qualified advice on that from folk on here. Whatever you do don't just buy a set on ebay cos you spot a bargain, the shaft particularly needs to suit your swing, so get fitted first!!!

I got mine for £299 from a retailer in London. They're fantastic, although I'd recommend you try a stiff shaft before you buy them.
