Unplayable rule

Thanks everybody it was just a knock between us.If I was in a comp I would keep my mouth shut And let them hack away.It was just that they were saying you could not deem it unplayable and I said you could from anywhere if you want.

Always worth carrying a copy of the rule in the bag. Even if you can't find the right ruling on the course you can point it out to the PP's in the bar after. They were clearly wrong

unplayable is a pretty basic rule that everyone should know.

Hopefully something similar to 26/2b (i) ?? (which, for water hazards, allows the penalty option of dropping where "last shot outside" was played). Now that would be nice and could save me quite a few hacks.

That is the rumour. It nearly made it some years ago (about 2008 I think).

You can if you say ''That's lost, I'll hit another one''

Of course - except that I'd say that the very fact of hitting another ball without declaring it as a provisional is the act that makes it lost. Your form of words (as you have stated) are, in the context of the rules, irrelevant.

Let's be accurate, Bob, for the sake of those who learn from the forum. Whatever words you use, just saying them does not make a ball lost.

The act of replacing the ball in play (ie hitting another ball, without declaring it a provisional) is makes it lost, not the words themselves.

So if I'm playing in the same group as you and I hit one in the rubbish and I say to you ''that's lost, I'll hit another one'',
you wouldn't understand what I meant?

Yes, I would understand that you were putting another ball into play under penalty of stroke and distance, ie, it would not be a provisional.

I will admit I dont know all the correct rules but I know more than the people I play with who have played for a hell of a lot longer than me.
And the amount of times they will say I will reload/hit another and I tell them you do know thats the ball in play don't you.
All I get is Well you know what I ment its a provisional

That's naughty of them, they should make it clear

Next time in a friendly knock just let your PP hit a provisional ball without him declaring it as a provisional and then tell him that it's now his ball in play and that he cannot play his original without penalty :)
