• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Two horses slaughtered already!

Who said anything about banning racing per se? Don't dramatise this, you get very few deaths throughout the racing calender in general but as soon as Aintree comes to the fore there is the smell of death immediately and we have 2 before the big race!

The horses are either not up to it which the trainers are culpable for or the track is still too tough.

Last year, by the end of Aintree there were 50 horses that died across the UK through racing. Only 2 of these at Aintree, 4 in Taunton, 7 in Cheltenham. Why all the issues with Aintree, the numbers speak for themselves. Aintree is as safe as many other courses.

Same as many other things, if you dont like to see it..........Dont watch. I dont bet, love animals, have no love for racing at all but I like history and losing the fences, reducing them too much will make this less attractive as the biggest race of the year across the world.

No more alcohol ever, that causes more deaths than most things........ Same with cigarettes......... There are risks, people take them yes the horses dont know the risks you say............Thats why some pull out of jumps they know if they can make it......

The world has gone mad. We will have to wear full body armour to leave the house next.

Too many people jump on the bandwagon not knowing the full facts as usual. Horses love racing just like we love golf, nobody forces them to run and jump fences. What do people think wild horses do? stand still and eat grass all day?

Horses have been used in war and the police over many years yet not many people seem that bothered about that do they? Why? because it suits them.

 bit naive there fella

Don't suppose any of the "the horses don't enjoy it" brigade happened to see the jockey less horse running in front of the pack quite happily taking on at least two fences before running off the track.

Great race and it looks like they may have got the safety changes correct

Won a few quid on Cappa Bleu in the each way market but nothing to get excited about

With rails on both sides of the fences until the run-off points it would be difficult to do anything else but 'run with the herd'.

Glad you agree that the safety changes worked.

He didnt run with the herd, he led it over the fences throgh his own choice and looked like he was loving it.

If he didnt want to jump them he would just have stopped running, nothing to do with railings

they have brought in an expert to ask the horses opinions

+1 Exactly, just trying to appeal to the masses with stupid language designed to get the weak willed and ill informed jumping on the next bandwagon.

I have been lucky enough to have ownerships in numerous horses and greyhounds over the years and have seen both sides. It's terrible when there is a fatality in either code with both owners and trainers alike being affected. On the flip side if a horse doesn't fancy running it doesn't matter how much you whip/kick, it ain't going to move.

If the liberals (who very rarely have any real animal interaction) get their way with horse racing you can guarantee they'll jump on the next available bandwagon.

Well said. I completely agree with you. An erudite post.

I can't abide anyone that wants to ban anything just because they don't like it. Millions of people love the National so get off your high horses! Whatever the hand wringing liberals say, it will still continue so the argument is facile anyway.

Spot on. How about those idiots who want to ban golf because of the pesticides used on the course and the fact the land could be used for better things in their eyes? Does the person who started this thread want golf banned too?

The Grand National was run by a bunch of chinless wonders, look at all the foul ups they have had over the last 50 years.
They have been 'reigned in' and it now appears that the race can be just as competitive and much safer for horses and jockeys. [same as F1]
If that is being a 'hand wringing liberal' well I for one are quite proud of that.

Where as golf is run by a bunch of erudite, modern hip and happening dudes. You just watch the natty dressers and look at the women swooning when Peter Dawson and his bunch of homies comes out to present the trophy after the Open this year. ;)

Having been to a few Nationals they are a great day out, but no one wants to see horses being killed. I think there will always be a difference between the horsey community who have a different outlook on these things from the non horsey people.

Personally I think they have now got the balance right between a great race with all it's traditions and ensuring Findus do not get another consignment of lasagne filling. They are talking of reducing the field to 30 next year from 40 which I am not overly in favour of, but I suppose it's the society we live in.

My wife is a 'horsey person' and she feels exactly the same way as I do.
Perhaps you are getting confused with horsey folk and gamblers.

I have had dealings with The Jockey Club and I can assure you that they are chinless wonders who make the golf folk look like navvies.

Strongly agree with your last para.
