TW - ever a "Great' ?

Look guys we need to get over this, it's one thing being jealous of the mans golfing prowess, now we are all jealous of him in the bedroom dept, he is a billionaire, he is an out of this world golfer and on top of all that a great sh*g, yep not only is he scoring better than all of us on the golf course he's scoring better than most of us off it. deal with it!! :D

To be fair, being massively wealthy helps with ladies motivated by that incentive. Remember the Dennis Pennis interview of Debbie McGee?

"What attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels?"

dont mean to be picky but it was Mrs Merton not pennis..
CLASSIC LINE!!!

Seem to vaguely remember Goosen 3 putting the final green in a major from about 12 feet ?

I think he went on to win the play-off but someone can put me right on this...

Very interesting read. Good posts by all.

I share the same view as ChrisMc. Yes it seems to be a minority view but that is not an unusual position for me!

I think Chris is saying that TW is a great player of the game. And of course he is, he is brilliant at golf. But he isn't classed as one of the greats in the history of the game in his opinion for a multitude of reasons. That is my opinion too as what someone is like in life dramatically affects my view of them as a sporting great.

This debate is partly about semantics and the use of the word great against a context of perception. In my view, a sporting great has an indefinable magic something that seperates them from the rest. What that special something is dependent on you and your interpretation of what makes a great person. It is necessarily something that is easy to articulate but for me, in essence, I need to feel that someone is a gentleman in order for me to perceive them as great. Again, personal interpretation comes into play as to what being a gentleman means!

Lastly, given that we haven't met many of the great people mentioned on this thread, we can only make our minds up as to what they are like from their public persona. This may be radically different from what we would really think about them were we given the chance to spend some time with them in order to form an accurate view based on actual experience.

So all that said, for what it's worth (not much really), here are my personal perceptions of some of the greats mentioned based on their public personas:

Bobby Jones - a great in the history of the game.
Schumacher - a cheating git but one of the best drivers ever
Faldo - a socially inept, utterly dull, self obsessed little Englander.
Higgins - a wife-beating tw*t
Seve - heroic barnstoming legend of golf
Palmer - blue collar gent
Nicklaus - the greatest golfer
Player - slightly mad but seems a nice chap
Best - misguided simpleton but one of the best players ever
Hogan - self obsessed and driven legend.
Sam Snead - best swinger in town. One of the greatest

Woods - a thoroughly unlikeable prole.

Other greats in my view: Botham, Moore, Viv Richards, Compton, Els, Alliss, Federer, Pele, Ali, Jessie Owens, Jean-Claude Killy, George Digweed, Garfield Sobers, Garrincha, Big Mig,Senna, Jahanghir Khan, Sugar Ray Leonard, Stanley Matthews, Bradman, Sergei Bubka, Rocky Marciano, Tom Watson, Borg, Mercx, Bolt, Phil Taylor, Kelly Slater, Robby Niash, JPR Williams and I could go on.

I would also like to write a list of people that are classed as great but are not in my view but need to get on with some work!

You might not agree with me but that doesn't matter as these are solely my views and that is what this thread boils down to. Happy to argue the toss about who is great and who isn't though!

Cheers,

Snelly.

Great post Snelly,.....I'm releived that at least someone shares my opinion, and isnt so in awe of Mr TW as many it would seem.

Excellent list of the other 'Greats' too, completely agree.

I didnt used to dislike Woods as much, and his demeanor seems to have gone south at what seems to be the same period that these 'indescretions' have taken place, ie the last 2/3 years.

If he comes out with some frank and honest interviews, and metamorphosizes into somebody more likeable, I think he might change my opinion, but until then..........

This is the most spot on thing in this whole thread and is something that is forgotten by certain people on here occaisionally.

So, rather than asking whether TW is a 'great', you should have asked 'who likes him?'.

If a GM hall of fame was to be compiled today TW would be in it - simple!! Regardless of whether you like him or not he'd be in there. The only way it wouldn't happen is if he's found to have taken some performance enhancing substances over the past 15 years..

In all sports there are examples of brilliant people who have won loads but never hit it off with the public. They are still 'greats', they just need work on their PR.

By the way, isn't Phil 'the power' Taylor a sex pest?? I seem to remember one of the tabloids running a story about him pestering two ladies..happy to be put straight on that one.. :o

AW - Lets reserve judgement on TW and his links to 'Mr Performance Enhancing Drugs".....

I still maintain there is a lot to come out about that, and quite how/why he bulked up so much over the last 2 years, coupled with an increase in testosterone seemingly, and also co-incidentally an injury that forced him out of the game for 8months just before Random Drug Testing was apparently brought in to Golf.......

Hmmmm.......lots of 'co-incidences' there dont ya think........?

Hmmmm let me think.......8months out of the game with a leg injury, and he becomes a lot bigger in the upper body??

Oooh another coincidence.

Your dislike of someone who has upset you by spitting, not smiling and throwing the odd club is unhealthy Chris, kind of a reverse psychology stalker.

'Bulking up' isnt something any golfer would want to do RB, any decent golfer would know that surely ?

Strengthening and toning, with particular regard to core muscles etc, but not muscular mass, it just gets in the way and hinders the swing.

Anyways......u like him, so dont worry, I'll just luv it when the plot thickens though.......watch this space......

I have no allegience to any golfer Chris, liking or disliking any of them has nothing to do with it for me. It is there immense talent they have for playing a game that I can make look very difficult that I admire.

Sports Science has moved on a great deal these days Chris, it is no longer a choice between being big or flexible any more. Swinging the girder like shafts these guys use and keeping them under control enough to keep the ball on the planet requires large amounts of both.

This guy manages to get it out there a bit too and he seems to "quite big"

From what i can see form your posts chris is that instead of having is he a great post this has turned into you tearing to bits and looking to try and find something wrong with his private life.

So he Spits so what but after that there is nowt wrong with him just admitt it you will feel better

Yup...the 2001 US Open. He won the play off against Mark Brooks.

Doug Sanders's famous miss came after a putt from about 35 feet above the hole, so it's much more excusable.

I disagree with Mercx, another drug taking cheat, from an era of drug taking cheats. Might as well bung Indurain on the list too.

I disagree with you. All cyclists that have done well are loaded on drugs - that is my view. It is the one sport where there is a level playing field as they are all dosed up! Just my opinion!

And Indurain IS on my list!
