I have witnessed Faldo at Muirfield throwing a total wobbler at a guy clicking at him in the early part of round 3....Lyle ripping into his caddy in a foul mouthed tirade in same Open,Seve going loopy at his caddy at 90 Open,Norman abusing his clubs and telling his caddy what he thought of him during Troon Open.... rose tinted glasses of many really need to be taken off.

Unfortunately he's not the first in the public eye to get caught with his pants down and i doubt he'll be the last. He will be the greatest, but here is my question . . . . .. Is he really your favourite golfer to watch ??? He's grumpy, and, I hate the way when he does hit a wide one you get the "C'mon wind", or "be the club" Actually, Apart from Tom Watson, at the open, Mickleson around the green and Boo Weekly at the Ryder Cup, I cant think of any other American golfer thats made me smile in recent times.

That is very very true indeed. I'm not sure I would have shown anything like the composure in those circumstances. Clubs would be flying and the air very blue, if I'd done that. Hats off to him, I never really thought of that before.

I know what you mean but the thing that annoyed me is that none of the commentators mentioned it.

The fact that he is a serial adulterer is neither here nor there. the reason his fall from grace is so great is because of the huge gulf in the public and private personas.
Best, maradonna, mcenroe etc didn't try and hide what they were. They didn't try and hoodwink the public in the manner that Woods has for the last 10 years. I think this is a major difference in the cases.
There's no doubt he's a hell of a golfer. Quite possibly the best player ever, but as a person, I wouldn't give him the time of day.

He hasn't hoodwinked anybody, the guy is entitled to a private life regardless of how he lives it. What happens off the course is of no concern to anyone but Tiger and his wife. It simply is not our business in any way shape or form.We watch him on the telly or if lucky enough play golf in person. We do not know him or indeed have shares in his life, even if you do use a nike golf club.
Aye right enough everyone would have thought so much more of him if he had come out and said 'while I am married I am going to shag my way through a pile of tarts'.

He was the brash, aggressive, winner who was taking the crown of 'All time greatest' away from Arnie. Playing golf successfully, and winning majors was more important than being media savvy, and looking for public adoration.
It was only as he mellowed into the late 70s and 80s that he became truly loved. As his power faded, his popularity increased.
But he was always a Gentleman ( eg giving Jacklin that putt in the 69 Ryder Cup ).
Woods has never been a gentleman, and will never, in my opinion, be the equal to history's greatest golfer.
But my memories are those of an ageing minority. The history books and the stats will go the man with most majors. If Woods takes that crown, history will smile on him, and future generations will accept his greatness.
The fact that golf will be the worse for being just a little less sporting will soon be forgotten.
