Hi all,

Hope everyone is good.

I'm Kevin, and I've recently started a golf based challenge. I've been a mid 20's handicap player forever, despite lessons, playing a pretty regularly etc etc. This year, I decided to do something about it...and set my self a challenge to get from my current 20.3 to a low single figure and maintain it, shooting a representative score in the last club comp of 2014.

Has anyone done anything similar? Has anyone managed to get from a similar handicap down to single figures??

I'd love to hear from anyone who's done it, or got close, or has tips etc!

I'm writing a blog about the journey too if you fancy a read...its here:

Thanks all
Kevin

There have been a few on here that have tried it (and blogged, not a universally popular thing). Not many have come back with any tales of success. It is quite hard, especially those last few shots. Short game short game short game if I was looking at doing it once you have a swing that gets it in play more often than not.

Good luck, I mean it!! it sounds like a challenge.

However, please don't write a blog. No one will read it. This is just my opinion of course, but a bigger more self indulgent waste of time I couldn't imagine (hi homie:thup:).

Just remember, time spent writing could be time spend putting, that's always been my mantra:rofl:

Kevin but you log in as Kenny?

Don't want to dampen your spirit but imho you haven't a chance. Set a realistic target that is achievable and you might get there. Getting and maintaining mid teens would be more realistic.

Its easy plunging down from high but staying there is harder.

I'll be honest……your very unlikely to succeed in your quest. If you've floated around a 20 handicap for a few years you're unlikely to have the natural talent needed to drop 10+ shots in a season.

I wish you all the best though. Most of all enjoy your journey, wether it be lower or not.

I did it! 18-5 in one season- played everyday, practiced everyday, no lessons just 'worked it out' based on what worked and what didnt.
Golf needs time I'm afraid.

I am on a similar quest to get from 18 down to single figures. I have only been playing about 5 times a year but now I am trying to play twice a week. Already seeing an improvement in my game.

Key things I need to establish to get me there:

1) get in play off the tee more as I hit a long wayward ball
2) work on 100 yards and in with a wedge / 8 iron

I already putt well, will definitely work on it but the two areas above are where I need to focus.

My route has been to identify my weaknesses and then get some lessons.

Good luck.

P. S if you want to write the blog go for it, people won't read it but you'll have a memoir of your journey

It's possible, I didn't manage it myself but did go from never having touched a golf club before and my first handicap of 24 down to 12 in my first year.

But if you have played a while and still off 20 it will be hard.

I wish you well.

I'm not sure that I'm alone in being totally bored by this sort of plan, it rarely happens and if you're good enough to do it then you'd get to single figures anyway. I hope to get there this year and I've been trying for about 16 years and am over 60, I don't see how doing it in a short period makes it any more interesting to read about than achieving it over a long period.

Sorry to be negative !
