Trevor Sinclair RIP

That wont happen, there's always 1 organisation that'll employ him and it usually the likes of Talksport who will.

Afterall they've got to keep their diversity quota on each show.
It will be interesting if they do take them back

I look at Le Tissier and his conspiracy views. He has made himself very unemployable. At least in the sense of talking about football. So, anytime I see him (usually on youTube), it is some channel that is more interested on having him on due to the controversy, and talking about his whacky views. So, maybe some youTubers will get Sinclair on to talk about racism and the Royal Family. However, it is difficult to see any main broadcaster on football will want him on their show anytime soon.

Free speech innit.
He's entitled to express his opinion, as long as it's not illegal, even if it's distasteful.
Others are similarly entitled to lambast him for it.
Interesting to see what TS do with him, as a media outlet that thrives on expressing controversial opinions and stirring up arguments.

Free speech doesn’t mean you can say whatever you like without any repercussions

Free speech comes with the the responsibility to not cause offence

I agree with all other posters that his comments were tacky, distasteful, poor. I disagree with your last comment however, as long as someone is not breaking laws, encouraging hate crimes etc. Who decides what causes offence? Should JK Rowling be closed down because she is offending some people. To others she is championing the rights of women and girls and is a hero.

We live in an era where you can easily find someone who is offended by any comment, that in itself is not enough. Sinclair will rightly have to deal with the implications of his comments. Obscurity beckons, that is the consequence of his use of free speech.

I agree. It's pretty much what I said. It's in a similar vein to the discussion about comedians. Play up to your niche audience at the risk of alienating the majority.

100%
I believe what he said is very poor and definitely very bad timing.
In this day and age of free speech there’s always someone who will be offended, sometimes it seems for the most trivial of things.
He will probably apologies but find his position untenable and resign,or obviously be fired.

It is about context. As Lord Tyrion said. there is bound to be someone out there that gets offended by the slightest thing. Simply saying God Save the Queen might offend atheists or Republicans. Comedy is primarily about poking fun at certain things / people. The audience needs to know what the subject of the joke actually is, and whether the comedian is actually targeting the people who are prejudice rather than the victim in the words of the joke. Often a shocking joke only works because the audience are fully aware that the joke is shocking, and would no longer be a joke if the audience literally agreed with the words.

With Sinclair, we can obviously rule out he was trying to make a clever joke. When Souness said "it is a mans game", it caused offence to many. But, you could easily find a defence for him, as it is a mans game as opposed to a boys game, and it is simply a common phrase. With Sinclair though, I'm really struggling to find a context in which he could easily defend himself. Sure, racism has always existed, and sadly will continue. But, to use that as a reason not to mourn Queen Elizabeth II was a remarkably bizarre thing to do. A women who, despite being at the head of a very controversial institution to some, has done so with such remarkable grace. She has always seemed to be a kind hearted lady to all other people, of all races, and has never put herself on any one side or another.

There is a certain irony about folk who go on about cancel culture now wanting to cancel him.

It was an odd post from someone who has previously posted pro-Queen comments, maybe he is having some personal issues.

Or maybe he just changes his opinion as and when the wind blows.

My statement was generic without going into details

I’m sure we are all grown up enough to know what would cause offence on a big scale ( as opposed to people just looking to be offended )

I usually agree with you, but this is not true. Free speech shouldn't endanger other people (shouting "FIRE" in a theatre) but offending people is generally fine (racist views apart)

One can argue the pro's and cons of Royalty until the cows come home and I would happily contribute and believe there's a discussion to be had.
But! On the day of the Queens death is not the time or place. Keep your counsel

On the whole I agree but those lines are getting more and more blurred. Ultimately people should be able to make comments, free speech etc and then public opinion can judge accordingly.

Precisely. I can't imagine there are too many people who hang around waiting to hear what Trevor Sinclair has to say on any subject.
I almost feel sorry for him - he's a man whose MH probably isn't great and he's just opened himself up to a world of hate and abuse.

Brilliant…? Extremely economically privileged and got a life of ease ahead of him…but already convicted of three pretty stupid and nasty things: violence against a woman, racism, and drink-driving — which is based on pure selfishness and recklessness and threatens the lives of others —- All in recent years (this is not a child nor teenager..) and then this…and the bleeding-heart brigade are out in force with something akin to “let’s show him some love, I feel sorry for him” etc etc

So predictable..

I will show some, if not sympathy then at least concern for Trevor Sinclair. Not for his tweet, I find the whole thing distasteful at the very least.

Whilst he has to take the blame for the repercussions, I am concerned for the fact that he will have woken up this morning to find himself a target of national hate, probably unemployed, probably not welcome at any football ground the length and breadth of the country, possibly losing friends and he has probably put that on his whole family. That is not a good position for anyone to be in and it can lead to some seriously bad places especially, as some have hinted at above, he may have questionable mental health and personal demons.

Whose fault was/is (most of) that though! I hope he gets the medical and psychological help he obviously needs!

Whether he has issues or not, he is entitled to his opinion and his view should be considered. He generally speaks very well when i've heard him on numermous radio shows so i dont believe he has misread the mood.

I know footballers aren't the brightest of chaps but he must've known the timing of his view would upset the majority and he would get backlash.

Those posting his address and phone number should be ashamed of themselves
