travelling with golf clubs advise please

i'm going on honeymoon to cyprus and for some strange reason my wife to be has booked a private villa next to the 1st fairway at aphrodite hills. i've also been given a free pass for as many rounds as i like which leads me to my question......(is she having a bit on the side) seriously though, there are so many travel bags available for golf clubs its untrue. should i go with a hard case and loose some of my weight allowance or a soft case?
i've never travelled with clubs before so any advice would be great, i,e do's and don'ts

I've always gone with a non-rigid golf travel case and stuffed the bag full of clothes, towels etc around the heads of the clubs to give the necessary protection. This has always worked well for me and has the benefit of saving on your luggage allowance if you're travelling budget. FWIW, I travelled with BA and they never checked the weight of the bag at all which was a bonus as it was well over the 23kg limit.

Additionally, although I've never done it myself, I've heard of people shoving in a broom handle to ensure that the driver shaft/head isn't the tallest thing in the case.

Btw, you've a very understanding fiancée - sounds like a solid basis for marital bliss if you're given a pass for virtually unlimited golf...unless it's a subtle test? ;)

the broom handle is a good idea. as for a subtle test? i'm not sure but i am sure that its gonna come back and bite me in the ass one day

I have a soft/nylon flight bag and I use bubble wrap around most of my clubs. Pack the remainder of the flight bag with clothing for padding but keep weighing to make sure that your not exceeding the limit. The less chance of something clanking around the better! Happy days :D
 
We bought cheap as chips soft bags and they have been fine. Bashed about by the handlers of course! Used shrink wrap to secure the clubs tightly together (head covers on) plus the broomstick longer than the driver option. So far so good and worked fine. Shoes, dozen balls etc in there also and under 20kgs.

No probs. Be sure to look at the terms of the airline and don't just class them as normal weight allowance or extra weight. "Sporting Goods" usually has a separate entry and can be over £100 each way on some airlines!!
 
It's a test. You are supposed to say 'Darling, play golf? The very thought! That would mean I wouldn't be with you!!!!!'

Make sure she insists you play and practically pushes you onto the course despite your protestations that you want to stay with her at the pool and talk to her all the time while she reads Fifty Shades.

Oh, and Elea Golf is pretty good too.

test or no test. can't resist the look of the 3rd and 7th. if elea is the faldo designed course then i have a round on that too with my old boss who lives out there
 
Izzo also used to make an inflatable cover for the heads of you clubs. Basically put it over the top of your clubs in the travel bag and blow it up to fit snugly around your clubs. Towels tend to slip and move around
 
Soft case here too, I bought an Ogio one a few years ago and it's survived 3 long hauls including connections. I pack it to the brim with bubble wrap.

I normally fly BA when golfing overseas and unlike the other poster I've always had mine weighed.
 
I've checked into taking clubs on airlines in the past, and most charge a 'sporting goods' fee.

BA just charge for an extra bag up to 23kg, about £37.
 
Many airlines allow you a set of golf clubs in addition to your normal luggage allowance FOC.

I flew to Dubai last week via Abu Dhabi with Etihad, and they didn't charge me a penny.

I use a soft bag, and my clubs have always been fine on arrival.

Loads of good ideas on here though with regards to protecting your clubs, I'll try some of those.
