Traditionalists, prepare to be grumpy

Simple solution, don't buy new kit off the shelf. Keep using the old stuff, or get custom fit so that you can decide on what specs your irons should be.

You should create a petition to have it discussed in parliament, as there's as much chance of that happening as you changing anything else.

So their marketing departments can claim that their new clubs are the longest ever. Probably true, but will they reduce your scores? Probably not, because they are becoming harder to use! Once upon a time people had a good idea of what a PW or a 7 iron or a 4 iron should be, but this is becoming increasingly distorted.

They can be what the bloody well want to be. Just because some old golfers are used to a 7 iron being 38 degrees or whatever it does not mean it has to stay that way. Things change, clubs get easier to hit, people adapt (well most people anyway...), lofts change, fog gets thicker, Leon gets larger, life moves on.

Move on.

It seems to be only you that finds them harder to use.
The clubs are easier to launch, they fly high - that's why the lofts are lowered, to keep the ball flight from scaring airline pilots
They're not lowering the lofts simply to increase distance at the expense of ease of use.
The whole concept of these clubs is to make it easier for beginners and those who have limited ability to get the ball in the air.
Playing off 12 there's no reason why you couldn't be using something like AP2's which have lofts closer to "traditional" ones.

And, Yes, the Marketing departments are giving out loads of spiel about this and that in an effort to getnyou to part with your cash
But guess what?

You don't have to....

Fair points. Golf clubs are certainly easier to hit these days and there's enough choice out there for you to find something close to older "traditional" lofts

Again delc if you got a PROPER custom fit you won't be forced to play with iron shafts that are too long for you.

As long as the swing weight and the lie are still correct and the head sits squarely on the ground, I don't think this matters too much, within reason. Longer shafts should give me more club head speed. :)

As an aside, as I have fairly short legs and long arms, I once as an experiment shortened a secondhand set of Ping irons by an inch to see if this improved my golf. I had to add miles of Lead tape to the heads to get the swing weights right, but then found that I just had a set of clubs that hit the ball less far than standard. They were no easier to hit, in fact harder if anything!
