2015, when Slumbers took the reigns (and the article talks of a huge contrast between then and now) wasn’t a primitive era….really not that far removed in many areas from today
Most importantly, what on earth do you mean by “events get left behind”??? Who in their right mind cares how many millions Rory makes?
Do you think the Open would lose gravitas if it hadn’t had the huge inflation of prize money since 2015??
Would golf fans not watch the Open if the prize money today had increased only the same as inflation since 2015?

It’s all the players wanted more slices of the money pie , bigger telly deals , bigger corporate sponsers , players wanting more money
All major sporting events go the same way , go to any big event and it’s full of corporate,
And yes events have the potential to get left behind , The Open wouldn’t be immune to that if it hadn’t sold itself out to the highest bidder and then jumped on the corporate bandwagon
