Ok forum, lets have words of wisdom on this.

I've got a difficult match coming up. It's scratch match play against one of the best (if not the best) player in the county, certainly not the draw I was hoping for to ease me into the new season!

I'm tending to view this as a "shot to nothing"; nobody will expect me to win so there's definitely no shame in losing but it would send out ripples if I did manage an upset. I'll obviously be doing my damnedest to pull it off!

It'll be quite enjoyable to play with such a good player but that will present different challenges from usual. Any thoughts regarding mental preparation, match tactics etc?

If he is one of the best players in the country I imagine his handicap will be in the region of +4.
Therefore you are 11 shots out of the handicap if playing a scratch match - yikes.

That said he could easily be 3 over and off your handicap so could you.
I think best advice is play your own game and don't 'give' him any free holes by taking on low percentage shots if an effort to keep up.

Just go out and play your best and I hope you beat HER..........

All the pressure is on her, because everybody (including you) expects her to win. Go play your game, don't try to be a superhero, give it your best shot and you never know what might happen. She might only beat you 5&4!

For the avoidance of doubt...... I'm a girl!

I don't know my opponent's handicap.... Although I could probably find out. I'd say no higher than 2 but probably (hopefully) not +4

Enjoy the experience , there is no pressure or expectation on you what so ever , being one of the best in the county she is not going to make many mistakes , so boring steady golf is the way , try find the fairways , then try find the green , make her realise it will need par's and birdies to win ..

Guessing it's a league not a knockout?

If so there's no worry if you somehow manage to pull off an upset you've 3(2) points more than you expected and if you don't chances are nobody else will either!

No lose situation!

Oops simultaneous post. Okay so there's probably going to be a few shots in it but as above the pressure is on her, might help to go in as underdog and with matchplay anything can happen. She could turn up with her Sunday worst and you could mangle her, or ye could both play well and it should still be close. Even if there's 5 shots h/c-wise that doesn't mean as much in the off season, the opportunity to play has been less for her than usual, besides even if ye played to numbers you would still expect it to go well down the back 9. So my advice would be to go out and win the first. Win the first then win the second. If you go behind remember its never over until its mathematically impossible to win.

The important thing is to try to keep the momentum, if you lose it get it back, if you have it keep it. The pressure is all on her, use that to fuel you every hole you win. Best of luck and match report please!

Sorry thought you were a boy! :o
If that case it is a much smaller differential - same advice though.

as an aside , remember the zombie avatar you had , turn up like that remind her if she wins you will break her legs & eat her family , stand as close to her all day as you can staring at her ..

Might be worth a bash ?

Might I suggest a new signature FairwayDodger...something like

TaylorMade R11 Driver
TaylorMade R11 3 Wood
TaylorMade R11 5 Wood
Adams Idea A12 OS 25* Hybrid
TaylorMade R11 Irons 4-SW
Odyssey 2 Ball White Ice Putter

Handicap: 7.4

There is a reason why the Fairway Dodger hits it like a girl!

:D

its great being the underdog, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I've played with many county and + h/cap people and been intimidated beforehand due to '+' h/caps, but once you start you'll see SHE doesn't hit the ball like Tiger, doesn't put every iron to 4 feet and sink the putt:smirk:

What you will see is consistency in not missing many fairways, a decent short game and course management that will probably have her putting for a bogie even when in serious trouble.

So, advice would be, play your best (obvious), concentrate, and don't take on that impossible pin position unless you have to.

...oh! and have fun:thup:
