Totally losing interest in comp golf

May be this is where my club have it right. There just aren't that many comps. Most of my golf involves knocking it round with the boys. I don't enter the knock out comps, as I can't be bothered to arrange the games, and if I qualify for the last 16 of a board comp, I normally offer a walk over as I can't be bothered to play. I might never get on a board, and most don't understand this, but I'm just not that interested.

Yup, same here.

I decided a couple of years ago to leave my club and become a nomad golfer, taking advantage of whatever deals are available.Three of my pals did the same.So we either play as a four ball with a pint at stake or if a couple of us are out we'll try and join a couple of members of whatever course we're playing for the social aspect and some guidance round a new course.

competitive golf takes too long for no real reward.

I like comps BUT I play with the same mates week in week out (6 of us swap around for comp groups), we all take it with a pinch of salt and view the £5 entry as a weekend premium charge. None of us are too bothered about winning with a "what will be will be" attitude.
You don't get paid for it (opposite is true), are unlikely to acheive county honours and should therefor just enjoy it!

Played for years once a week in a comp and no bounce games, puts lots of pressure on you and you cant 'try that shot again'.

recently started midweek bounce games and its a joy to play, do or die golf with heaps of fun and self reward.

Still will play comps as thats the 'exam' :smirk:

Does it get to the point where comps make the game different? I've played in fourballs with lads in a comp and me just tagging along.

No mention of winning and nobody talking handicaps other than if someone gets a shot on a hole. Nobody beating themselves up if they get less than 36 points but a pint bought for a particularly good game.

I'm going to be entering comps this season, not to win but as a tracker to see how I'm doing against my peers. If I win, so be it and its more vouchers to buy even more unnecessary golf gear, if not then if was only £2 which I would only have spent on a newspaper and a bar of chocolate.

I use golf to get away from the rigours of Mon-Fri. If I didn't enjoy it, I'd walk away from it
