I do not seem to have any interest in playing comps.I love just playing golf on an evening by myself for the fun of it, comp after comp after comp all season just doesn't interest me anymore. Think I'm falling out with the game slowly.

Do you care about your handicap?

Had noticed more than the usual negativity recently...

Mid-life issues?

Weather getting to you?

Holiday due?

That'll be the slow play 5 hour rounds in all weathers?

I agree there's nothing like a summers evening knock for a few holes in glorious sunshine.

Maybe give a few a miss a month off and start over when the course and weather have picked up?

I've been like this for a number of years now
Winning isn't of great interest any more, I can only play my best on the day and I've no control over what everyone else scores. If I win, I win. More often than not I won't.
The only reason I play Comps is to get a reasonably accurate handicap
Treat comps as a means of reflecting your handicap rather than an excercise in trying to beat the opposition

Im in the same boat here and get bored of playing every weekend in a comp when your not playing that great..... If you dont play the comps its hard to get on the course!! I enjoy the banter with the boys and informal knocks but they are few and far between in the summer. I sympathise with you brother

No mid life crisis? I'm 50 so that is over and done with.
Weather? nope it's England we do not get weather of any note, I'm used to the weather by now.
Holiday due? Hell YES!! 7 days to go and Lanzarote here I come.

Negative....True I've always been a glass half empty kinda guy. It's my make up cannot do anything about it.

Never played in a comp & tbh it doesn't interest me. I play golf for fun (I'm never going to make a living out of it). I'm happy having a friendly knock with mates & £2 on the Par 3s closest pin.

I think its about striking a balance. We do get a glut of comps (midweek and weekends) in the height of the season and so it does feel like a constant battle against CSS. I tend to try and use the evenings for a few holes on my own or with whoever is around and just relax and swing. No thoughts (no really) and no stress and then let the comps come and go. I am still focussed on single figures but at the moment going with the upward flow and hoping the good game I feel is inside comes out soon.

It has been suggested that the OP is displaying negativity but perhaps that comes from a surfeit of "card & pencil" golf causing a reliance upon safety-first golf; losing the joy of trying a high risk shot to see if it comes off.

I'm afraid that I tend to avoid our club on a Saturday as from 1 April to 31 October it is comp golf every Sat with only 4 or 5 exceptions. Too much he cried!

No mate, I do that too often as it is. I'm hitting them all well, no problem there, bit of trouble with the fairways but nothing new :)
I'll leave it out of the bag and just use driver and irons. No James it's more that I'm sick of playing comp comp comp. I've already qualified for one of the board comps and really do not want to play the matches I have to nevermind any more I qualify for. I love the game but am beginning to prefer just a knock for my own enjoyment then comps.

May be this is where my club have it right. There just aren't that many comps. Most of my golf involves knocking it round with the boys. I don't enter the knock out comps, as I can't be bothered to arrange the games, and if I qualify for the last 16 of a board comp, I normally offer a walk over as I can't be bothered to play. I might never get on a board, and most don't understand this, but I'm just not that interested.

I'm the opposite this year! My first 18 months as a member I only played a few more to keep my hcp active and to gain the experience. Last year I played most of the comps I could but really didn't enjoy if as I was struggling with my game. This year the game is slowly coming together and I'm enjoying the comps more but mentally I don't treat the round any different to a round with friends and just looking to play my best. It might be that my hcp is at the other the end of the spectrum and looking now to kick on and get it lower.

If you're enjoying the game but not the comps I don't see any problem, as others have said in many posts before we play it for the enjoyment it's not our living. So just enjoy it and play the three qualifiers to keep the hcp active and enjoy it.

I've been through phases when I didn't enjoy comps. Just put too much pressure on myself.

The guys I envy are the ones who play comps as though they aren't comps. They enjoy the game whatever. That's what I'm trying to aim for.
