Top 100 Courses Lists (links dominated..)

Ive played both links & park land , but must admit as i have done previously i dont get the the hype around links golf ,
if the course is kept well & has good greens il enjoy playing anywhere so im not anti links , but please dont anyone tell me of the skill in bouncing a ball 40 yards short of a green and allow the contours of the fairway do its thing , or some of the real links that have real undulating fairways and run offs into pot bunkers , your drive might land 30 yards short and left of a fairway bunker but with the sloped fairways end up in it , and in it i mean in a fairway bunker that i cant play a full shot out of ..

ok now i will hear its a hazzard & i shouldnt be in it , fair enough i say but , if i played short and wide of it but the contours fed my ball into it how is that a bad shot ?
your in the middle of some fairways with the ball under/over your feet how is that right or reward for a good drive ? maybe im mad but with the odd exception i expected to be rewarded for good shots not rely on good bounces ..

Just my opinion tho , if you prefer links who am i to say you are wrong ? fill your boots and enjoy, just as i would choose to do the opposite & play parkland ..

the links terrain just lends itself well to golf design with the natural dunes and undulations no two holes are the same.
with my home course one thing that struck me striaght away is every hole presents a different challenge.

with parkland there a lot of quite similar holes in my opinion, not knocking parkland courses as you can get very good ones but i think course designers are limited what they can do due to the lanscape unless they have big bundles of cash available,
so on average a links course offers more variation and interest imho

It's a bad shot because you clearly DIDN'T play short of it if your ball rolled in. And regarding the ball above or below your feet, well that is all part of the skill of being a better player and being able to play a greater selection of shots.

I'm the opposite to you, parkland golf bores me, give me links or heathland any day. But if we all liked the same it would be a boring place.

Yep totaly agree each to their own , should a shot that lands (quiet few :D) middle of the fairway be punished by having ball above or below your feet ? or having a run off into a bunker tho ? if you miss fairways you accept what comes ..

We could , as i have done before go round & round in circles debating links v p land but each will find pros of their favouite & cons of the other , and in reality each have pros and cons , it just which ever you are use to swings it your way ..

But like i said i aint anti links i just prefer parkland .. bring on Ballyliffin in july
 
Surely the beauty of our game is that it is played over such varying terrain. There is not one defined pitch or court that never alters, every course is unique and presents different challenges. I am a member of a parkland club with 2 very different courses and I enjoy the challenge of them both. I also like going away though and playing links courses and I have played some of the best, Old Course, Turnberry, Machrihanish and Hoylake to name a few, but my favourite has to be Montrose. Just enjoy the variation that comes with the game.
 
I would absolutely love to be a member at a links course, the shame is that the nearest one to me is 50 minutes drive away :( I've only played two links courses (Borth and Ynyslas, and Southerndown) but being able to see the sea, playing bumps and runs, and fast fairways and greens just appeal to me because its so natural. Southerndown is especially natural as it has sheep wandering all over the course which adds to the charm of the place!
