i was just wondering what you guy's think regarding practice on the range. can it be counter productive?

i WAS playing great golf and down the range all was good. i was still hitting balls on the range anyway to make sure my skills didn't fade. however it seems like i have undone myself and formed bad habits that have deverstated my golf.

should you only work on your bad area's? should you pay a pro to supervise your practice. what do you all think?

I am sure supervised practice would be great but very very expensive. I tend to work the most on my best areas namely chipping and putting as I get most enjoyment from it and I see it as most important in the long run. I don't think you can practice too much as long it is done well and not just beating balls for the sake of it.

Practise needs to be structured to a degree, the best investment i made was a slow motion camera. Means when practising I get instant feedback and can rewatch shots to see if I am achioeving what I want, and whether the changes Im trying to make are actually happening. Also good to have a look at the bad ones and see where it breaks down.

Went through a phase several years back of practicing way too much to the detriment of my game. Last year was better and I played most summer evenings with perhaps one practice session per week on a specific, usually short game or putting. Much happier and definitely more fun even if the results never manifested themselves as I'd have liked. Finished my winter practice now and just getting to grips with chipping again (Linear method) which is a work in progress but progression is swift. Once I'm happy with it then its all about playing again this year too.

If you are having the same bad shots it may be one specific that has changed and so a quick swing MOT with your pro will get it sorted in minutes.

There is practice and there is practice......

Hitting shots on the range is good if you're working on your swing or specific technique.
Practicing to play is where you see improvement in your golf, make the practice mean something. eg. 7 out of 10 exercise, need to hit 7 shots out of 10 between specific targets before you can move onto a smaller target........

The best form of practice for improving your scores is playing golf. You learn how to hit the ball on the range, you learn how to play golf on the course.
