Wiggo has spoken in favour of compulsory wearing of helmets when cycling...

Seems to have 'upset' quite a few in the cycling fraternity...

Personally I don't like being told what to do which has in the past cost me a few quid in fines for failing to wear a seatbelt...

Can't see me putting on a helmet to cycle round the shops to get my Times... Might be more inclined if I was still cycling greater distances but thats unlikely to happen...

Both my lads are keen cyclists... Mostly recreational but one does take in the odd MTB competition... They both wear helmets 99.9% of the time...

Quite a few cyclists on this forum... What are your feelings with regard compulsory wearing of helmets when cycling???

I wear a helmet and so do both my boys, jst so if they come of the cycle path and bump their head, but cant see it saving you as like the other day you get hit by a bus. No they should not be made compulsory, as the seat belt is known to save life's.

I pretty much always wear it unless its a 3 mins to the shop down a back street jobbie. If I am going anywhere near a road I expect to see cars on I don the cap.

I also tend to ride a bike like I am driving a car, obeying the rules, leaving space, not darting through gaps etc.

Are you really saying that helmets have never saved any lives?

I would readily admit they don't save all lives, but then neither do seat belts either!

I can see where he is coming from as they CAN be life savers but don't think it will ever happen as they want more people out of their cars and this would just deter people...

I never use to wear 1 when just pottering around on mtb but now I'm into road cycling never go out without donning the helmet second nature now, especially after last year doing 3day ride through Wales and mate came off on 1st day and went head 1st into a dry stone wall and trashed his lid ,was very lucky and worth £70 for new 1 when we found a bike shop,
so helmet every time for me.......

A mate of mine was doing thirty odd down a hill. A motorist knocked him off, breaking one of his arms, and his Collar bone on the other side. Said motorist got out of his car, picked up a couple of bits of broken helmet, and said, always thought these were no good! I nearly always wear one. Defo if I'm off road, and mostly if I am on road. The exception being cycling to the shops, as per others on here.

What I don't like is hypocritical parents forcing their ten year olds to wear a lid, and yet not wearing one them selves.

Should it be the law? Not fussed really.

A helmet may save your life - and if it saves your life in a collision with a vehicle it may 'save the life' of the driver. Bit like not wearing a seatbelt. You don't strap up when a passenger and asked by the driver - then involved in an accident and you are badly injured or indeed die as a result of the accident - you may just have ruined the life of the driver.
