Looking at the magazine this week, and interwebbything pics of new clubs it struck me that we may be being mis-led.

We are always told in reviews that the Pro Golfer likes an anti-glare finish on his clubs to stop the sun searing the retina. Sounds reasonable to me.

So why are the Mizuno MP68's (and previous incarnations),MP62's, Titleist ZM's, TaylorMade Tp Forged, Nike V Blades and the new Wilson FG Tour all mirror like in the finish? These clubs surely consitute the bulk of the irons used each week on tour and they're all shiny. Yet the "club" irons , G series, Burners, Mx's etc etc are a silky matt finish.

Do the Pro's reallycare about the finish or is it just marketing hype?
Personally it doesn't affect me at all.

Personally I prefer a chrome finish, i've never experienced the glare these manufacturers have dreamed up and I like the sharp look of a nice slim mirror like chrome club.
I guess it's no coincidence that the anti glare finishes are always a bit more money.

I remember a few years ago Greg Normans Cobra irons were covered in rust. He didnt have time to wait for them to coat them so said he would use them in their raw state and bin them afterwards.

They dont give a hoot about their gear as they can now get identical equipment within an hour and THEY get paid fortunes for using it while we PAY fortunes and take better care of our clubs than we do our wives'.

I have to be honest and say the finish has never really bothered me. Its all about the offset (minimal) and as thin a top line as possible. I've never really had a problem with glare off my clubs.

chrome 'em up to the hilt..they look gorgeous in chrome, I'd climb over my missus to get to the new Mizuno MP68's.

I can't say glare has ever bothered me, well except when its off my playing partners bald head ;)

OY Watch it

Revenge of the Slapheads is not something you want to behold

I keep telling the wife that it is a solar panel for a sex machine, but she doesnt believe me

Just ordered a black nickel wedge not cos of the anti-glare just think it looks good (like the oil can) but seriously how many times do we get such strong overhead sun for us mortals to be concerned?

The cynic in me agrees with the others re the marketing BS :D

Only a problem on your wedges and even then it needs a number of things to be in place before you get blinded. Mind you, it's not much fun when it happens! On the other hand, it can sharpen your mind on the shot once you can see again!

Agreed. The logic in me says that only clubs over 45deg would suffer from it and then only if the sun is very low, and that's not taking into account having the hands forward or ball back in the stance decreasing the loft even more.

I like shiny :)
