tips for starting my 4-yr old boy playing golf

Managed to take the boy out for his first time today and he loved it... just the local sports centre course. Taught him the interlocking grip which he sussed in no time, other than that I just let him whack balls off a tee.

There was a guy there who watched our last hole, I think he's the "pro" there, or at least he coaches kids there and looks after the course. He let Luke stand in one of the unfinished "mini" range bays and hit a few big plastic balls with a bigger plastic club. He said at this age just focus on making sure they turn the body... he said to Luke "try and imagine an arrow pointing out of your back, and when you do the backswing, make sure the arrow is pointing to the flag, and after you've hit it, make sure the arrow is pointing at your Dad (standing proudly behind him).

Luke then said... "Yeah? Well watch this!" and proceeded to throw the ball up in the air and whack it baseball style 10 yards down the range... LOL. Kids. Gotta love'em.

On the way home my boy said to me "Dad, golf is easy, you just have to hit the ball in the hole.". Brilliant. :D

Our club held a get into golf day for juniors.Very successful. No-one quite as young as 4 but a few 6-7 years olds. Good to see their faces and they clearly enjoyed it. No coaching as such but plenty of fun games around putting, chipping and hitting full shots. I even donated a dozen balls to be given as a prize.

I think as long as the kid is enjoying it, isn't getting bogged down in too much tuition and just has fun then get them out there. It is a fantastic game and I'm sure we'd all agree golf teaches so much more than just getting a ball into a hole
