Time for a moan....

My club is a little antiquated too. I've missed several competitions that i didn't know were on and hadn't put my name down for. Getting a time before lunch on a saturday is difficult, which really puts me off the place, and there is no online facility whatsoever. Being a new dad, i don't get down to the club much so am out of the loop so to speak. This is where a web facility would be so useful

At my old place it was simply a question of logging into the website and i could see every comp, book times and arrange ties. I'd love it if my new place did the same, but cant see it

Not allowed mate. You have to pay your entry fee when you put your name down, hence why it is in the Pro shop. It is to stop people putting there name down not knowing if they can play or not. No turn up then you loose your entry fee.

How come the guys in the pro shop etc sign all their mates in? Do they pay for them all at once? I am sure if you explain your situation they might make exception!

here is the problem

if you are going to run such a system you need to revolve the time and day the board goes up otherwise it's inherently unfair.

second is obviously that if you can't ring up to put your name down then no-one should be on the sheet that hasn't visited in person - again it's inherently unfair otherwise

only one thing worse than silly rules - that's silly rules that aren't applied to everyone equally!

I would add the other obvious - this is exactly why 'course access and competition entry' should be so high on peoples list when looking at clubs. shame that you have the best club but can't get into the competitions.....

Pretty much says it all.

If the sheet came out at our place at such an unfair time, merry hell would break out.

You could ask them to reconsider the time and criteria, and if they won't budge you could bring it up at an AGM.

Similar problems occurred in our club about 7-8 years ago after a necessitated influx of new members. So here is the solution that was put in place and remains to this day.

At 7.30pm on a Monday a draw is made from a tombola. All you need to ensure is that you get there before 7.30 and get your name down. Gives everyone a fair crack of the whip and stops the practice of the old boys you mentioned blocking times. When your name is called you can enter yours and one other name on to the start sheet.

I don't believe it is ideal, but it is reasonably fair. As the club's web site guru I've made the case for trying to have a system where certain blocks maybe reserved for those who are too behind the times to use an online system and the rest of the times are acquired by those willing to use the internet and slowly move the culture to entirely web based. That said, the bar does do a turn every Monday night when it would otherwise be dead.
same at bellshill , but we have the chance to play on the friday and be involved in the sat.comp . same format. except for champ comps. and before any mention of different conditions in the weather, it changes by the hour just now never mind on the day

It seems to me you have too many players and not enough tee times.
So, to keep everyone happy, you need to either reduce the number of players or increase the number of tee times.
Reducing the number of players is out of the question so the only alternative is to increase the number of tee times. Can the comps not be run over Sat and Sun?

We use the brs online system 4.30 pm Friday 3 weeks before a comp on your marks get set go! The first 2hours of times go within minutes but there are generally enough times 7/8 min spacing to get everyone out in summer between 7.15 and 15.30.
if the sheet gets full there is an automated waiting list just select time slot and it fits you in on any cancellations.
Fortunately ive not had a problem booking a slot this year although can be a struggle to get early ones which suit me best.

This is one of the things that I think they need to look at, holding it over the weekend would be better.

People have mentioned an online booking system. We have a good club website that you have to log into and you can access all sorts of things. But when you click on the comps it only tells you the date and what it is. There is an option there to see who has entered, but there is never anything on there. So I think the facility is there to do it and your bar card is linked to your login so any entry fees could be taken automatically from it.

I think what it was that got my back up regarding this was captains day last week. I went into the shop the day after the board went up to find it full. It was like something from the twilight zone, most of the members seem to have identical handwriting............:mmm:

Instead of trying to squeeze 180 members into 150 tee times, it could be spread over the weekend which would allow spare slots for the casual golfers to play also INCLUDING GREEN FEE PAYERS. Mention that to your committee and see if that gets a reaction. :)

competition sheets go on the board between 4;30pm and 5pm, 10 days before the competition. Mmembers may enter their own name and one other.
During the winter (shorter daylight hours) the committee allow 5 extra tee times to be taken on a Sunday to try and give members a chance to play.

I wish we had this problem of too many players. Ours is too few being a small club. I dont mind though as I always get a 9:26 tee time every sunday :)

If people dont mention it to the club then they wont change anything. I bet the vast majority dont say nothing as they get their tee time every week. Clubs should cater for their entire membership especially with todays non standard working weeks (is there such a thing as a standard mon-fri 9-5 working week anymore).

Get them told Adey!!

Medals at my track are ran over both days at the weekend.

The competition sec made the change to this the year before I joined as alot of the members are self employed and work Saturdays.

Since then comptition numbers have increased and everyone has the opportunity to play the monthly medal.

I would take the advice that's already been given and speak to the club about it.
