When Padraig won the Open last year in those tough conditions some commentators questioned the win as Tiger was not prsent. Yesterday showed Tiger is vulnerable in the wind and proves what a great result it was.

Come on Lee Westwood :)

I would concur that Padraigs win at Birkdale in 2008 in the absence of TW is not devalued at all in light of how Tiger struggled in tricky weather yesterday. How would he have coped at Birkdale which was 10x worse? Poorly I'd guess.
It's been said before that TW wins Opens when weather is calm and sunny and that remains the case it seems until he proves otherwise.

Welcome to the forum but I think the problem Tiger has got is more to do with the rough than the wind. I have noticed watching the PGA events that with the exception of the US Open they never face really serious rough. I see guys miss fairways by 30 yards in the PGA tour and still pepper the flag. Links golf is all about controlling your golf ball and Tiger didnt do this just like half the worlds top 100. Is there a lesson to be learned for the PGA ? Should they make courses a little more difficult with thicker rough rather than making them longer?

Worlds no 1 golfer and he cant even hit a driver. He has always struggled with the big stick, fair enough he can hit a 3 wood 300+ yards but you would expect better.

For all his massive hitting etc. its really his putting from 10 feet that got him the wins, prob the best putter under pressure ever.

Is it me, or are the courses on the European tour actually more realistic. At least most have some degree of thick rough which can penalise the errant shot whereas on the US tour as long as you can find it you can hit it.

I'm surprised Woods didn't employ his "stinger" as much as in previous years. Is that because it puts too much pressure on his knee through impact or is his swing just not good enought to hit that shot consistantly at the moment. I have to say his driving did look average on both days.

Agreed. :)

I actually think because Tiger missed out last year, he was always going to struggle this year.....
He's a control freak (as much as most players are) and just because he's made St. Andrews look like mini-golf on Blackpool beach, he was never going to be in the running this time....you can't control everything that goes on in a game on Links....as we all know!!
Shows you how little Sam Torrance knows......
(Sorry Sam, but backing Woods when he hasn't seen a proper links course in 24 months is bonkers.)

My money was always on Davis Love III.

NOT.....

He IMO will always struggle in typical links conditions.
His open wins were at St Andrews--no real rough--Hoylake were the course was running fast and fairways "burnt". He could employ his 2 iron off the tee and keep ball in play.

Driving is and will continue to be his problem as he tries to hit it too hard--he could play 3 wood 2 iron off the tees and hit it as far as a lot of the pros.

He was not in contention in 07 at Carnoustie.
