Tiger and dropping the ball.

According to Rob Lee and Tony Johnstone, Tiger took a dodgy drop on the 17th yesterday. He carved the ball into the river that runs up the side of the hole and took his drop, apparently and allegedly, 30 yards closer to the hole than he should have.
Did anyone see this?
There doesn't seem to be much info available on it, just what's been posted on Twitter.

This isn't the first time Tiger's drops have caused controversy. Obviously his Masters mess-up is the big one but there have been a couple of others as well.

I followed it on Shot Tracker on the PGA Tour website.

After his tee shot, it said he had 315 to the green from where his ball ended up in the drink. After the drop, his yardage was 327, which would seem to contradict what they're saying.

Didn't actually see it, though, so only have the numbers - no idea how reliable they are.

With a referee present at all times I find it strange how there seems to be so much controversy?
Even the masters drop only came to light after his post round interview and admitting deliberate dropping half a yard back so to hit the same shot again.

I saw it.

He didn't watch it go into the hazard, so relied on a marshall.
He dropped opposite where it entered the hazard, rather than on the line it went in.
Doubt it was deliberate.

The point is that he had to drop at the point where it entered the hazard and after he hit it and it went pretty wide into the drink, the Sky commentators said he would have to drop well back because the ball entered the hazard close to the tee and travelled across a fair bit of water. I must admit I was surprised when he then turned out not to be first to play, and Lingmerth who had hit the fairway was further away from the hole. Looks like a dodgy drop but probably the rules official's call.

Is there? Our pro is a qualified referee with the R&A and PGA and has refereed many top matches including Tiger, Seve etc. When he referees he covers four holes of the course rather than following a particular game, so it is quite possible that any infringement wasn't seen.

There is no way his ball crossed where he dropped. It would have had to make a 90 degree turn in the air at that point. Which it clearly didn't.

Tiger knew that, but was obviously disinclined to refuse an offer to drop where he did from a rules official.

Is that cheating? Could be.

Is it the spirit of the game? Certainly not.

You don't have to drop where it goes into a water hazard though, and without seeing it I'm assuming he went across the hazard to drop within 2 club lengths of the hazard but was still the same distance from the hole? Perfectly legal if this is the case?

He has the following choices:

Replay the shot (3 off the tee, effectively).

Drop within 2 CL of the point it last crossed the margin of the hazard.

(For a lateral WH), keeping the last point where it crossed, drop back as far as he likes.

Look at the video in Bob's post. There is no way the drop was kosher.

Can he/should he be DQ'd..?

The 'on a line as far back....' is for Water Hazards(Yellow Stales/Lines); the within 2 CLs is for Laterals (and either side)!

There is no way he dropped it where it crossed..............this is getting laughable and I'm beginning to think people are scared to challenge him. Look at the film. if anything he dropped it where it went into the water, not where it crossed.

It's farcical.

Looking over the clip a few more times, it started right and went even further right so the drop should've been taken a lot further back.

I saw it but it was impossible to tell. They said it entered about 80yds before it hit the water but said nothing about the drop on air that I recall. I'm pretty sure there was a rules official just in front of him when they showed the drop too so can't imagine there would have been anything dodgy about it.
