Dropping the ball

To be honest - I would consider this is one of golf's absolute basic rules and procedures to follow - and whilst remembering all options for what you can do take a little remembering at first - it is a no-brainer to know that you don't do what your FC did, and it makes me wonder what on earth else your FC doesn't know.

BTW - Apologies if that sounds a little harsh on you for not being 100% certain - we all understand how difficult it can be when an FC is adamant about the procedure he is following being OK when you are certain it's not.

I was not 100% certain, that's the point. Come to think of it, he probably knew but did not want to lose as we were on the 15th and he was about 4 points behind in a cup competition.

Ok, so he was right.
In that case what is the point of 2 club length rule, if you can go back as far as you like keeping the ball between you and the hole.

You can go 2 club lengths sideways, not nearer the hole, or as far back down the line between where the ball lay and the hole as you like, or back to the spot where the previous shot was played from. Your choice!

Here's an extract from the appropriate rule (28) that gives the options available. One of the simpler things to find in the Rule Book - which can be tricky to navigate, so/but is ideal to have on a phone app!

Note: The Rules are carefully worded and should be read/applied absolutely literally - with no interpretation, though it's also important to refer to 'definitions' where appropriate!

<start quote>
If the player deems his ball to be unplayable, he must, under penalty of one stroke:

a. Proceed under the stroke and distance provision of Rule 27-1 by playing a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5); or

b. Drop a ball behind the point where the ball lay, keeping that point directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped; or

c. Drop a ball within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole.

If the unplayable ball is in a bunker, the player may proceed under Clause a, b or c. If he elects to proceed under Clause b or c, a ball must be dropped in the bunker.

<end quote>

Option b. was the one being (wrongly, but fairly frequently) applied.

FWIW. The equivalent seems to be even more frequently (wrongly) applied at Water Hazards!
