Thomas Cook

Very sad news with 9000 job losses as a result of this. Boris Johnson says there is nothing more the government could have done which clearly isn't true.
At least anyone that has booked up or are overseas will be protected by ATOL and CAA.
wonder if Boris would if the Chairman was a friend or had donated to the TP;)

I had a feeling that when the phone rang this morning at 7.40 it was A, my daughter and B, her telling me Thomas Crook had gone bust. So after an eventful morning on the phone and net which has not helped the global warming cause. We have spoken to Santander and are in the lengthy prospects of claiming back our brass as it was paid for
( flight ) on the credit card. The bird from Santander asking for proof the company has gone bust, has she been in a coma for a month. Other flights a day earlier have now been booked with Aer Lingus. Total cost of Flights are now £1500 as against the initial £600. And hour later the flights had gone up to £1500 each. Hmmm seems some folk are making a couple of quid on the back of TC going under. But is that how companies stay afloat. Car park extended. Over night stay extended. Small matter of contacting hotel in San Francisco and alls sorted.
Odd how some folk react to this. Daughter when she called was stressed as she has a week in Pathos booked. She was showing concern for everyone else. As Tash said, it's crap for everyone involved, but no one but yourself will sort it our for yourself. Focus on that. She has spent 3 and a half hours at TUI booking another holiday which was rammed with folk re booking Holidays. She is now sorted, extra three days on holiday. Just had 2 mins on FB, it is full of folk moaning, " what they gonna do". Nothing's gonna happen on there. Unfortunately you have to get off your spotty to get results.

So it seems the CAA are setting up a dedicated service for the Thomas Cook upcoming bookings as of 30th Sept with instructions not to take any interim action or claim if you believe you are Atol protected.
Sad state of affairs for any company to get into and reading some reports that there are some 800,000 upcoming bookings that will be unfulfilled, it fills me with a sense that mismanagement was deeper than at first glance. Lets assume the average holiday package price is £2000 (and that would be a cheap holiday with TC) then that's c.£1.6Bn, yep Billion, of capital thats somehow, obviously, misappropriated somewhere along the line. Not to mention the over 1 million holidays fulfilled through the summer season.

I, personally, think there could (and possibly should) be a commons inquiry in to this in the spirit of the BHS/Arcadia shambles to come.
However, in reality I doubt there will as the Atol trustees process will cover a lot of this costs wise.

The company has been paying dividends (to Chinese, German and Swedish) and bonuses while racking up debt and their business hasn't grown so there should be no surprise that at some stage this crash landing was on the cards.

If the government stepped in it would be UK taxpayers money that would just flow off to other institutions, mostly overseas. The CAA would not renew their licences and I suspect the inevitable would still happen at even greater cost.

As usual tis the workers and customers who take the pain and have my sympathy.

How did you pay for the flights apj.

The flights paid for by credit card so we will get the money back I'm sure but trying to get flights so we don't loose the £750 for the hotel and golf is a different matter, and by what I can see the insurance will not pay out because we just need to get there

Can the UK intervene in subsidising them? Isn't it against EU regulations to subsidise industry.

Quite possibly, but let's not overlook that the UK pushed hardest of all EU countries for that regulation.
And as every brexiteer is an expert on WTO, I'm sure they also know they have rules on state aid.

Did the UK push hardest for that regulation, I'm not aware of that, maybe you can post a link that gives some details.

I'm also not aware that every 'Brexiteer ' (as you describe them) is an 'expert' on WTO. I'm certainly not an expert but do take a passing interest in the way it works. From my very limited understanding their 'competition ' rules are nothing like as stringent as the EU's and do infact allow countries to help out as long as they are not creating an international trading advantage.

Yes the UK are one of the most compliant when it comes to state aid regs. So much so we plan to stay aligned with the EU post brexit.

Do you have a preferred term over brexiteer?

Not really but I guess 'Leaver' is more in tune with 'Remainer' 🤔 Brexiteer is a bit like Remainiteer but I guess the worlds your oyster (or even Oysteteer) 🤯
Ill get me coat.

The news channels have gone into their usual overdrive. I can't believe people were still turning up at the airport expecting to get flights. Feel desperately sorry though for those that have saved hard all year to given their families a break and end up with nothing but this mess to show for it

Haven't dealt with Thomas cook in about 7 years since they mucked up my flight. Said I wouldn't use then again

Have found first choice and jet 2 to provide much better level of service whilst keeping up with the curve

The world is changing

Adapt or fade into history

I rather liked ‘quitter’ - with a remain voters being a ‘stayer’ - but that didn’t go down that well will some on here - possibly as it didn’t have such a dynamic ring to it.🤪

The German government is rescuing Condor, which are somehow related to Thomas Cook. They spend €350 million on it.
