Thomas Cook

Think you’ll find the trend has been going on a lot longer than the Brexit argument. And the GBP ‘v’ Euro is higher than it was 3 years ago.

Brexit will have had an impact but it isn’t the sole cause by any stretch of the imagination.

TUI UK’s profits are up by over 3%, and up by 25% in the cruise market. People’s choices are changing and TC didn’t respond quickly enough to accommodate those changes.

Is it ? Thought it had dropped 20% since 2016 ?

And I don’t believe I said it was the sole cause but it will have had a big impact on their borrowing to cover their losses due to hotel prices in the EU staying the same ( Euro ) but with the exchange rate dropping in those years someone takes a loss somewhere.

I’ve never booked a package holiday through a tour company and I think millions of others are doing the same online. Flights, hotels and car hire all separately sorted to suit me and the trip I am after.

Makes sense that these guys are struggling.

The people who’ll likely lose out are those who booked flights separately. Package holidays are covered by ATOL, stand alone flights aren’t.

Thomas Cook have been offering flight only for a while.

Stop it! It’s suits Phil conscious to blame everything on Brexit. U.K. holidaymaker numbers to the US rose by 1%, because of Brexit.;)
Are you sure Brian, I hadn't noticed... :)
Seriously guys ? Do you want to drop to levels you normally expect from those rabid Brexiteers or remainers - thought better of you pair

Is that how it is now - anytime Brexit is mentioned the factious comments must follow , guess it’s now impossible to just have a polite chat about it

Technically speaking that's not quite correct. Guess who IS due to start his round the world trip next Saturday jetting out of Manchester with TC. First of all, to not pay for your flights with a credit card which will cover you should it go belly up is asking for trouble. Secondly to book a holiday and not cover flights through insurance is again asking for esttrouble.
The worst part is being in limbo. Already looking at alternative flights and at the moment flying to Dublin via ryan scare. And then onto San Francisco the day after looks the best bet.

The £ has fallen from €1.30 to €1.13 since the brexit vote. You attempted to be clever by saying “than it was 3 years ago” rather than saying since before the Brexit vote. Three years ago (Sept 16 and post brexit vote) it was hovering around 1.15-1.17.

What bit isn’t correct? You didn’t say?

Is that the rate that was engineered up prior to the referendum by the City boys on the back of the predicted landslide Remain victory; that rate?

If you want a polite chat Phil, why don't you answer the point about why only Thomas Cook and not any of the other package holiday firms being this far in the :poop:?

Ex wife and youngest daughter flew on a Thomas Cook package deal to Skiathos today.

Not knowing if they will be able to have their full holiday or if it will be curtailed.

On a different matter , it was raining on Skiathos and as it has a short runway, the airport closed, so they diverted to Corfu.

They have been in the airport terminal for 2 hours, no seats, no food or water, no sign of a hotel being provided and no sign of the flight going. Absolutely no support from ground staff.
It’s nearly midnight there and they are camping down.

The whole thing has disaster written all over it 🤦‍♂️

And it reached €1.09 at one point. Exactly one year ago it was 1 cent less than it is today... so who is being clever...?

I have no idea - I guess TC biggest area was the European Traditional holiday destination - I know TUI have been hit as well

And just to confirm - not once have I said Brexit is solely to blame for what’s happening with TC

Seriously Phil, do you have to bring Brexit into everything. I've shown that Reuter's have already reported the changing holiday market is taking people beyond Europe. I've shown you the TUI UK is in profit. And I've shown that the number of holidaymakers to the US is up. And as per my recent reply to GMC, I've shown that the Euro was actually lower a year ago. I acknowledged that Brexit will bear some blame but if you want to look to apportion blame for TC's demise you need to lift your eyes beyond Brexit being to blame for you missing your last birdie putt.

What’s a year ago got to do with it? The comments were around the impact of brexit and you’re just randomly pulling dates out of fresh air.

Yes but they aren’t going to the EU countries as much because of the pound against the Euro - people going to EU countries through dropped by 10% - Thomas Cook have suffered since the Referendum - a lot of jobs going to go and fair amount of money out of the coffers.

No Phil, you didn't say it was solely down to Brexit; just inferred it. As others have pointed out, Thomas Cook have been up :poop: creek for considerably longer than 3 years.

We landed back from Las Vegas today with TC, flights only. For the price I think they are a really good airline and we purposefully chose them over BA and virgin.

Didn’t get any sense of impending doom from the crew and as ever they were excellent.

On a personal level it’s a real shame, we are invested to a small but not unnoticeable amount, have family members who work for them and it was my wife’s first job so she has loads of friends still there.

I hope they can recover but it’s unlikely due to who they owe money too.

The bit I couldn't get my head around was they were considerably cheaper than most airlines and not by just a few quid.

They’ve certainly followed part of the Ryanair model and charge for a lot of optional upgrades/extras. So maybe that was how they envisioned making up for it.

I think ultimately they’ve been mismanaged, no clear strategy or direction. They seemed on one hand to be going for budget market share, on the other luxury.

The external management consultancy from McKinsey wouldn’t have been cheap, and has ultimately been a failure. Be interesting to see if any blowback comes from that decision.
