This weather?!?!

We've had a lot of rain over the last couple of weeks (Herts). It's been a dry couple of years generally, and water tables are low, so it's mostly a good thing...
But for our golf course, not so good.... London clay abounds, so being so wet early in the autumn could be a prelude to a very soggy winter. If it stops raining for a couple of weeks while the grass is still growing we might have a chance, but I'm not optimistic.

I guess it depends where you stay. Here in Perthshire we haven't had that much rain and the courses remain in excellent condition for the time of year. (Who said it always rains in Scotland?)

You are a premium heathland course which drains well. Can't imagine you have many "issues" with weather other than frost and snow in the winter.

Yeah certainly been pretty crap. Some courses may need it if they have failed to look after fairways properly , i played toot hill yesterday and it was in fantastic condition. No rain needed there. Same for chigwell a couple of weeks back.
Who mentioned greenstaff ? Torrential rain is actually pretty useless as it runs of the top and away.

So who are you pointing the finger of blame when you state “fail to look after fairways” when it’s the job of the greenstaff ?

A lot of courses will be dependent on the soil underneath - this year a clay course will have done well where as a sand based one will have struggled

Staggered ours was open today without restrictions. Couple of places with standing water, but credit to our greens staff for keeping the course open and playable.

I think Aliens are invading.
The sky has gone a strange colour - a bit like the colour of British Gas vans - and there's a scary bright orangy yellowy light up there too....
Should we run for the hills?

The amount of rain we had the last 48 hours must have been an entire month's worth, surely it can't rain again til mid November now? There's none left.

Played 9 holes this evening with a mate. Appetite for it is dying.

Winter golf is here. We will probably look to play some local links courses to get some enjoyable golf.

Some tough conditions this weekend and surprised that we were right off the the tips for todays medal when the course has been saturated and it was only a monthly medal. The course has held up really well. We had some problems with our 3rd and 4th fairways following last summer, and despite the best efforts of the green staff throughout this summer (and a lack of fairway watering) they are already showing some significant improvement.

Tomorrow will be the 4th day on the trot I will be playing, although the course is wet we’ve had perfect conditions for playing, brilliant for the month of October.

Makes a change for Shetland to get better weather.

We have had loads of rain, and not a surprise the course has been closed a number of times.

Feel for greenkeepers, the extremes of weather the last couple of years can not have been easy of the courses.

More rain all day today if the forecast is to be believed. I am sure the practice ground will start to retain some water now and perhaps the prone areas on the back nine but given the lack of rainfall we've had in the South East, it has to be a benefit to the course. Sadly it has brought stones to the surface in some bunkers and knackered my practice plans for today. Will the rain, being more continuous and not a heavy deluge, help the green staff and course, aside from the ground being wet and muddy short term?

Amazed at how well my course has stood up to the amount of rain we've had recently. It's still 'pretty young' but drainage issues were dealt with pretty quickly and effectively.

Bunkers (course's weak area imo) have suffered, but that's even more incentive to stay out of them.

Greens still magnificent!

The rain has been a nightmare on my course it's been shut 3 times in the past 2 weeks greens are still in great shape but fairways on some holes are really boggy, I'll see how it plays today after yesterday's of rain

This has to be some of the worst weather we’ve had at this time of the year in a long time?

Courses around us are already closing and it’s only mid October... not a good sign for the winter ahead

LOL. It always amazes me how short some peoples memories are.

Mines been shut on and off (mostly shut) from the middle of September. Huge puddles in dips in the ground when open. It's like playing a course full of lakes.

No closures yet but I fear the trolley ban is looming - back massage booked for a week Friday with an Osteopath appointment soon after! Think it's going to be a long winter of carrying :(
