Things That Gladden The Heart

Wife got a message this morning from an old friend saying she thought she’d just seen her Dad, who died in 2012, on an old clip on BBC Breakfast.

So we put BBC Breakfast on the IPlayer and fast forwarded it to were her friend had thought dhe’d seen him.

It turned out they were doing a piece on the UK’s Best Truckstop winner and were comparing it to the 1988 winner and how things had changed.

The 1988 winner was Mick & Pegs roadside caravan near Harrogate and on the clip they were serving 5 Truckers and one of them was indeed her Dad.

Cue the shouting and laughing followed by her breaking her heart.

We were totally unaware of him ever being filmed or that the clip even existed. It was a great start to the day.

It was mate, he was only 46 in the clip and just how she wants to remember him rather than him ravaged by illness as he was at the end.
Me and Missis T watched it as my lad is a trucker and does nothing but moan about the truck stops. We were both laughing when they were cooking the bacon and used a cast iron” iron” on the grill to flatten the bacon 😂

I never did understand why car manufacturers ditched steel wheels.
For sure, alloys look pretty, but apart from that what's the point?
Manufacturers have put in a lot of effort to reduce weight, not just alloy wheels but lots metal parts are now composite and the gauge of metal has been reduced to the minimum needed, why you no longer get a spare wheel or jack. It is a large part of why fuel mileage has improved so much and less weight means less tyre wear.

They haven't been very successful, have they?
How much does the average car weigh nowadays compared to, say, 20 years ago?

What is an average car?

e.g A current Ford Fiesta may be heavier than a early model but can you really compare the 2 based upon many things the most basic of which is size.

i.e cars have got heavier because they have got bigger with a lot more kit e.g Air con, Electric windows, airbags with all the explosives and electronics.
