Things That Gladden The Heart

You should post some photos.
Love watching this type of thing on YouTube.
You ever dabbled with epoxy resin?
Yeah, the bookcase that just went out the door had a bit of epoxy work where the oak had some voids and natural splitting/burrs. Used a lovely copper colour to accent against the oak.

Done quite a few dining tables that use epoxy either as contrast or as river style ones.

I always think I should take photos but then either forget or I just get caught up in the build. The guys that film stuff must take ages to actually get stuff done, pissing about with cameras, they get views in return obviously.

I'm not professing to have any wisdom in your field. A question though - can you mix the native wood sawdust in with the epoxy to "hide" it? I've seen videos of doing this when repairing china etc, trying to match the colour.

For small repairs you can mix sawdust with either epoxy or just standard wood glue to create a filler and it works well for the most part.

For larger voids it would look as obvious as the epoxy would. The main reason for using epoxy is to contrast and highlight natural defects in the wood and provide a level surface. Burrs for example are nice aesthetic features but on a table top you want a smooth surface (mostly) so the epoxy highlights the burrs and levels the surface.

I have jars of sawdust of various species as well as sanding dust in jars for finer repairs. Seldom throw saw/sanding dust away.

Just listened to Wire - Pink Flag (1977)..and now Genesis - Trick of the Tail (late-1976). The bands and music are miles apart on the music spectrum - but as much as I’ve loved TotT since it was released and never got into bands such as Wire (I really didn’t get it) - is it allowed to enjoy both - as I find that now am. And how come I can listen to and enjoy punk/pist-punk nowadays when I couldn’t be bothered with it back then. Funny old thing musical taste.

Sawdust and glue mix is exactly what my old school cabinetmaker dad taught me to do for small repairs. Wish I’d watched and listened more to him building and repairing furniture. A treasured possession of his I still have is the cabinetmakers toolbox he made when completing his apprenticeship just pre-war I think.

For repair work I will use sawdust/glue for small fill outs but these days repair kits are much better and usually hard wax that you melt in and then tamp with a cold flat iron, then just plane off the excess and then a quick sand and refinish. I think the kit was £100 but that includes the heating iron and flat plate. Then it's just waxes to replace.

Large repairs I'll usually try and splice ne timber in to the damage.

Spanish Nationals singles championship, bowls, first round today. Played against a really decent player… 2nd round for me tomorrow. 5 more matches, on consecutive days, before the quarter final. Semi final & final the following days.

Ambition… make it to the q/finals. Anything beyond that is a bonus.

3rd round tomorrow. Brain fart late in today’s match but got it over the line.

Tomorrow at 4.30pm might be very different. I’ve got one of Spain’s very top players… aye well, it’s been fun.

However, been asked to trial out at one of the regional squad sessions.

Blimey that’s quite a high level mate 👏

One of the guys in the swindle his wife is Chair of one of the two bowling clubs in the town - we had an open day with them a while back and it was a great success

So we have a friendly match with them arranged in a couple weeks time

We are also trying to find a way to have a bowling green temporary at the club to host them for the night

4th round tomorrow.

What a match today’s game turned out to be. Took out one of the Spanish squad in front of the Spanish team manager & several selectors.

We had a problem with our Shark vacuum cleaner earlier in the week. The dust holder / cylinder wouldn't stay shut so it was constantly dropping the contents. I was looking to buy a replacement but was struggling to find the part number of the model we had. Whilst looking for this I discovered it was still covered under the 5yr warranty. I rang Shark, they could not have been more helpful. A replacement part, cost on their site £59.99, is on its way FOC. Great service.

And round 5 to look forward to tomorrow. A tight first half to today’s game but I restricted him to 2 points to my 13 in the second half. One more win sees me in the q/finals… so close to achieving my first goal.

And we go again tomorrow at 12:30… just had a look at the draw. Oh dear! The cream has come to the top. A very rarified atmosphere for me.
