Things That Gladden The Heart

Seeing the stuff in the news about immigrants speaking English, reminding me of my dear old grandma who didn't speak a word of English but managed to tell the old man when we'd been swearing.

On the drive home this evening I was stopped at a junction controlled by traffic lights. A young girl (late teens) walked alongside and then in front of my car to cross the road. She had her left hand raised in the air at about head height. When I looked closer there was a snake wrapped around her forearm. No idea what sort but was probably about 2 to 3 foot long and light brown in colour. First time I have ever seen anyone take a snake for a walk. 🐍

Was a local story recently...

And Poms are worried about snakes in OZ

Just askin’

Do you take a snake for a walk or a slither?

I've just seen an interview with the Children's Laureate, Frank Cottrell Boyce. He spoke brilliantly about going into schools, the interactions with kids. Some lovely stories and I suspect he would captivate all of the kids he would speak to.

Some evenings ago I was painting some terracotta plant pots on our patio when I tuned in to a blackbird singing endlessly. I spotted him at the top of a very mature tree in a garden close by. Over the next few nights I've taken to sitting outside with a glass of wine mesmerised by his output and even got my binoculars to study him at work. Every evening he's up there but disappears for a brief spell before returning and being back on stage. The variety and volume of calls is astonishing and I'm finding him to be very therapeutic.
Of course, I try a few whistled replies and eventually convince myself he just responded when, in reality it's blackbird for "Your'e crap at this mate!"
Google tells me he's reinforcing his territory.
I'm clearly no threat.

One of the lads in our fuddle, his house backs onto a large wooden area. He has an app which recognises bird songs. He posted on our whats app group 18 different birds he had heard that particular evening. His only problem is that he cannot see most of them because how dense the woods are. He has said he regularly sits on his back garden and listens to them singing away.

You talked about hearing aids some time back Tash. Apart from social interaction benefits another is hearing in full the amazing array of bird song out on the course. One of the guys actually said "Wait until you hear the birds".
The downside is hearing a milk float approaching as you stand over the ball. It's actually someone on the next fairway carrying and clinking and clacking 😅
