Things That Gladden The Heart

For those interested in this - A Northern Requiem, a second performance…Sheffield in April. I found it thrilling, thought-provoking…and ultimately really rather sad.

Update on this - tickets for sale for the Sheffield performance.

And hot off the press - very likely to be a further performance in Durham Cathedral in September or October - date tbc. A Northern Requiem is a very moving piece - especially so for ex-miners and anyone associated with mining or a mining village - it's about the trauma of the 1984/85 miners strike.

For me - one for whom the strike was something happening elsewhere in the country (I lived in Bristol at the time and hadn't met my wife from Chesterfield) place names like Orgreave, Markham Vale and Shirebrook were just that...place names. They are now real to me...indeed the local bus to Markham Vale goes past our Chesterfield road end.. it feels odd and hits home seeing it.

The concert comes to a close with this...

Lay my body in the cold, dark cave
I spent my life in darkness
I’ve got no fear of the grave
My spirit will soar in Godly flight
I spent my life in darkness
So that others would have light.

Pre-grades comp for Mini-Wilson at the weekend, she's had some struggles due to a growth spurt - 3rd AA with 3rd on beam, (with a fall), and 1st on floor - would have easily passed grades. Same again in 3wks and we'll all be happy.

The Generation Gap:
In the car.
I'm driving grandson home listening to Neil Young via Alexa on smartphone.
"Til the Morning Comes" - a 77 second ditty - a filler.
"That's not really a song is it Gramps?
Its just a chorus".
"But it's nice to sing though".
Next track "Rocking in the Free World".
"That's Neil Young as well?"
"Yes".
"Why's he do that"
"What?"
"Do a quiet song than a noisy one?"
Then I tell him I've got quite a lot of Neil Young records.
"Records? You mean like CD's like Mum had?"
"No, flipping records! When you come round next I'll get them out, show them to you and you're gonna st down and listen to them".
Moment of reflection....
"Ok"
Flipping kids today!
😅

On similar...had me thinking of what age it would be that the average youth would know the answer to the question...'what's the difference between a 45 and a 33'. Would they even know what I was talking about...

Same question with cars, do you know what a choke is? Funny the things that evolve and just become a mini memory. 'don't flood the engine.......' 🤣

I had to call out the AA a few days back. All meters and computers now. His machine told me I needed to run the engine for 114 minutes to fully restore the battery. In the bar after golf next day we were reminiscing over bump starts, socket sets, torque wrenches and starting handles 😉
("Ive flooded the engine. You'll have to come and get me"
"Where are you?"
"In the river")

Few years back when the wife was taking the girls away the big car had a flat battery. I jumped it and then bought one of them starter packs you keep in the glove box.. so you don't need to have another car present to jump the car. Now it lives in my car incase the 12 volt goes lol I've got battery monitors on both cars so I can keep an eye on the life of the 12 volt so if they start to get rubbish I'll just replace them
