Aha
I get it now, all depends on the size of the fish
When you get a fish on, the impulse is to wind the reel fast, and this is fine if you have a small one on.

However if it’s a biggie, then you run the risk of the fish coming off or snapping your line if you play it too hard,

What you need to do is keep the rod high and the line under tension at all times, the rod is your shock absorber, if the fish runs, let it take line, then when it stops running, start to wind in the line, play the fish by using alternate side strain.
Eventually the fish will come to the surface and can be netted 🎣

Bob likes to wind! I love the show so much I've even thought about fishing. They make it look so idyllic. I did fish with my Dad once as a kid though and the scales made me want to puke!

It is much more to do with getting out into nature, relaxing and contemplating your navel… than catching fish, that’s a bonus 🎣

There are several mental health charities that promote fishing as therapy, once I go down to 3 days a week work in May , I may well volunteer

That is definitely the appeal. Some of the best parts of the show are where the camera just pans across the countryside.

It looks so complicated though and the other thing my Dad had that really made me want to puke was maggots. Grim.

What Fragger hasn’t revealed is the best way to keep maggots warm & wriggly this time of year is to keep a few of them under your tongue….

That might be an urban myth spread by fishermen.

Maggies are very clean and come in different colours, so you can match them to your outfit ;)

Haven't fished for years but I've still got my old Greys fly rod and gear in the garage.
I'll definitely be digging it out after I retire next year and have the time.
Rarely caught anything, but never cared. It was always a great day out.

Paul is always shouting at Bob "don't wind" when he gets a fish...you may have read it as wind (the weather), rather than wind (the reel thingy)...
If you wind at the wrong time, you can put too much tension on the line and it will snap, there is an art to landing a decent sized fish, knowing when to let it go and when to reel it in, when to be defensive and when to be aggressive - landing a fish after a decent fight used to bring me great satisfaction, I need to dust the rods off and go fishing again!*

*when the weather improves
