The countries where the fires are happy have been having these sort of fires for decades because of the environment they are in - I spent years living in Cyprus and every one knew the dangers of fires etc and what would happen if they become uncontrollable - as happened a few times.

The climate in these countries has meant the risk has been the same for decades

Yes there is issue with climate change etc but it’s not the reason any times there is a weather issue

Think we’ve had a wild fire every year for the 7 years we’ve been here. Sometimes it’s the local firemen, other times it’s helicopters and seaplanes water bombing it. The severity of it, once it gets a foothold, is very much determined by the wind.

Used to see loads in Cyprus - even saw the TA Army boys cause one by throwing flares around dry grass 🤦‍♂️

A few times people have deliberately started them around the mountains and destroyed acres of land

If Twitter closed down for good today, I wouldn't give a monkey's.

I‘d be disappointed. There’s a few very good support groups on Twitter for cancer sufferers, inc one for those who have or have had bowel cancer. The knowledge sharing, some of it quite technical, and empathy is excellent.

Not every feed is full of bile. In fact, maybe it’s because of what/who I follow but I’ve only ever seen a couple of toxic tweets.

To clarify the wild fire v climate change discussion - Most (all?) fires are caused by humans and would be started irrespective of the weather/climate. The ferocity and scale of the fires is significantly increased by the high temperatures currently being experienced in the region. Climate change has not caused the fires but it has meant they are much worse than in previous years.

That's the point tho, with perfect conditions for fires to spread / cause more damage is down to climate change

Considering it's all human based anyways it's an entirely human caused issue.

As these things go - it’s what it’s used for. Like Facebook…I’m on a few great Facebook Groups (all historical/nostalgia) and they have been great for reconnecting and finding out family history etc. But too many just promote irritating tripe and I don’t post on them, and ignore them.

And so for Twitter. I don’t post on it at all but I like using it to follow my club‘s elite amateur Lottie Woad as she posts about her successes and failures making her way through college in the US and up the Ladies World Amateur ladder.

So I wouldn’t miss it one moment for my own opinion/thoughts publishing purposes - but I’d still miss it were it gone - though I’m sure the likes of Lottie would simply move to Threads.

Perhaps not the best or worst place to post this. A very dear friend succumbed to cancer on Sunday evening. It was 5 years of a very difficult battle for him. His last year looked like things were improving and he even talked of returning to bowling. But in recent months it really got a grip.

The replies on the club’s FB page are perhaps a fitting testament, and accurate too. He would go out of his way to do anything for anyone. I saw this first hand a couple of years back as he visited our oldest bowler every single day, who was 92 years old. He took him shopping several times a week , and for a beer each time they were out. He fed and watered him almost every day, including taking him out for a Sunday roast every week. All this whilst fighting cancer…

RIP Big Dave, a real giant amongst men.

Finally found a weather app as good as Dark Sky was before Apple killed it. Apple Weather deleted in favour of
Yr (link)
YR has been my weather app of choice for some while. Quite why a Norwegian forecasting services gives better results for British weather than do British forecasting services is anyone's guess? But I trust it more than the Brit services
