Strange game golf, a unique combination of athletism, phisical and mental ability.
Its amazing how much confidence plays such a huge part in our game at any given time..

For me,

-New kit
-Spanking one down the middle on the first
-Chipping in
-Snaking one in from outside 20ft
-Thinking you lost your ball, only to find it sitting up on the edge of the OB boundry
-Being 2 down with 3 to play and winning on the last

What things give you that mental boost?

Any one of the following....hitting one straight down the middle, finding the green with my approach, chipping well, putting well.

Sometimes it can be others actions that spur you on. My last matchplay game was a good contest. On our 12th hole my oppo get a shot so I was up against it. We both hit good drives but he found the fairway bunker. He chopped out and was still behind me. he then nailed his approach to about 8 feet. I knew that I had to hit it close. I hit my approach pin high but to the right of the green. Thankfully I avoided the bunker but it was between the green and me. The beauty of matchplay is that each hole is an individual contest - if I messed this up then it didn't really matter. I commited to the chip and the ball sailed over the bunker, hit the fringe and kicked left. I was left with a 10 foot putt for par. Once again, nothing to lose, attack the cup and in it went. So, I've scrambled a par which gave me a huge boost - my oppo then missed his putt - leaving himself a two footer - which he then missed so he ended up with a 6 nett 5 and, more importantly, a lost hole.

This gave me such a boost it was unbelieveable!!

I still use this when I'm playing now.

Not shanking once in 18 holes. Sorry I think you meant achievable goals!!!!! Nothing like hitting a great drive but the thing that gives me the most pleasure is getting up and down or holing a good 3-6 footer especially in matchplay when you just know he's thinking he's got you now

Hitting it well on the range before heading to the tee, and making a few putts on the practice green.
My 8 iron
Having a 5p coin as a ball mark
My St Andrews pitch mark repairer
Bob Rotella audio book playing in car before I play! lol

In no particular order.......
Bobmac ;)
Nailing my woods off the tee's and fairways.....
Hitting my 5 Iron dead straight on our long par 3's
Getting away off the 1st straight and out of trouble with an audience watching.
Getting up and down to save pars
Getting encouragement from lower handicappers

Level par after 4 holes? :)

Not thinning it off the first?

Staying out of the trees on the first hole I play using a driver? (often the 7th) :D
